EXPRESSING ITS DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO THE TORGEN FAMILY ON THE

PASSING OF FORMER RHODE ISLAND STATE REPRESENTATIVE, THE HONORABLE

EDWARD H. TORGEN

     WHEREAS, The Honorable Edward H. Torgen passed away on February 21, 2014. He

2

was married for 54 years to Mary Ann (Webster) Torgen, and was the father of Susan Torgen,

3

Tracey and her husband Edward Keenan, Kristin and her late husband Will Flannery, and Julie

4

and her husband Joseph Mason. He was the son of the late Samuel and Cora (Cook) Torgen, and

5

the grandfather of Meghan, Eddie, Sarah, Norah, Danica, Garrett, Michael, and Lindsay; and

6

     WHEREAS, Edward H. Torgen graduated from Central High School in 1945, Brown

7

University in 1950 and the Boston University School of Law in 1958. He was a retired Navy

8

Commander, United States Naval Reserve, serving from 1945 to 1970, also serving for fourteen

9

months aboard the USS Weeks. Mr. Torgen served our nation with valor and distinction in both

10

World War II and the Korean War; and

11

     WHEREAS, Mr. Torgen was a member of the Rhode Island Bar Association for 56 years

12

and practiced law as part of a flourishing practice at Torgen and Callaghan with his law partner

13

Matthew Callaghan. He also served as an Acting Judge of the Second District Court of South

14

Kingstown and as a Probate Judge for the Town of North Kingstown; and

15

     WHEREAS, Edward H. Torgen was a man of integrity who served our state and his

16

constituents with tireless devotion as a State Representative, representing North Kingstown from

17

1971 to 1973, as well as serving as a Councilman in Warwick from 1963 to 1964, and later as

18

Town Solicitor for the Towns of Richmond and Narragansett; and

19

     WHEREAS, Edward was passionate about many things in life including his family,

Stepping Out Inc., a charity he and his wife started to assist learning disabled adults, Brown Bears

2

football, his crew members on the USS Weeks, and the game of golf. He was a member of the

3

Quidnessett Country Club for 45 years; now, therefore be it

4

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

5

Providence Plantations hereby expresses its deepest condolences to the Torgen family on the

6

passing of former Rhode Island State Representative, the Honorable Edward H. Torgen; and be it

7

further

8

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

9

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mary Ann Torgen and family.
