EXPRESSING ITS DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO THE THURBER FAMILY ON THE

PASSING OF CHIEF ROBERT F. THURBER

     WHEREAS, Robert F. Thurber of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, passed away on February

2

16, 2014. He was the devoted husband of Catherine (Masse) Thurber for 58 years; and

3

     WHEREAS, Mr. Thurber was born in Pawtucket, the son of the late Clifford and Mary

4

(Waldron) Thurber. He was a United States Army Veteran who served our nation with honor and

5

valor during the Korean War; and

6

     WHEREAS, Mr. Thurber received an appointment to the Pawtucket Fire Department on

7

November 16, 1957. Highly regarded by his superiors and peers for his strong work ethic and

8

dedication towards protecting the safety of the Pawtucket citizenry, and their property and

9

possessions, Robert steadily rose through the ranks, first being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant

10

in 1967, then to the rank of Battalion Chief in 1982, and finally rising to the rank of Assistant

11

Chief for the City of Pawtucket in 1982; and

12

     WHEREAS, Shortly after retiring from the Pawtucket Fire Department, Mr. Thurber was

13

appointed Fire Chief in the Town of Smithfield, Rhode Island, retiring from that position in 1993.

14

Chief Thurber was a member of Local 1261, the IAFF, the Pawtucket Fireman's Relief

15

Association and was a past President of the Pawtucket Fire Historical Society; and

16

     WHEREAS, Besides his wife, Chief Thurber is survived by his children, Deborah

17

Thurber, Captain Robert Thurber and his wife Elizabeth, and Lieutenant Michael Thurber. He

18

also leaves behind two grandchildren, Amy Ramsey and Robert Thurber III, and two great

19

grandchildren, Isla Ramsey and Michael Thurber. He was the brother of the late Clifford Thurber;

now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

3

Providence Plantations hereby expresses its deepest condolences to the Thurber Family on the

4

passing of Robert F. Thurber; and be it further

5

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

6

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Catherine Thurber and Family.
