CONGRATULATING EACH OF THE 489 RHODE ISLAND TEACHERS WHO | |
SUCCEEDED IN ATTAINING NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION FROM THE | |
NATIONAL BOARD FOR PROFESSIONAL TEACHING STANDARDS | |

1 | WHEREAS, National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential |
2 | administered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. It is a rigorous, peer- |
3 | reviewed process that ensures that board-certified teachers (NBCTs) have proven skills to |
4 | advance student achievement; and |
5 | WHEREAS, National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential, requiring |
6 | that teachers analyze their teaching context and students’ needs, submit videos of their teaching, |
7 | and provide student work samples that reflect growth and achievement, having demonstrated: (1) |
8 | A strong command of content; (2) The ability to design appropriate learning experiences that |
9 | advance student learning; (3) The use of assessments to inform instructional decision making; and |
10 | (4) Partnerships with colleagues, parents and the community; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Research has shown that students of National Board Certified Teachers |
12 | outperform their peers in other classrooms on achievement tests, and that schools and districts |
13 | with higher concentrations of NBCTs see marked improvements in their school culture, |
14 | collaboration and teacher retention; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Pursuit of Board Certification is a voluntary, intensive, structured program |
16 | that helps teachers find gaps in their teaching and improve their craft with the result that they are |
17 | better prepared to meet the needs of students, highlighting their role as learners, leaders and |
18 | collaborators; and |
19 | WHEREAS, A total of 489 Rhode Island teachers have achieved the advanced teaching |

1 | credential of their own volition, and committed themselves to the higher teaching standards Board |
2 | certification requires; now, therefore be it |
3 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
4 | Providence Plantations hereby recognizes the significance of this important professional |
5 | credential, and the high standard of professional achievement it represents; and be it |
6 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
7 | Providence Plantations hereby honors and congratulates each of the 489 teachers from Rhode |
8 | Island schools who took it upon themselves to undertake the arduous task of pursuing National |
9 | Board Certification and succeeded. These 489 Board-certified teachers have the thanks of this |
10 | Chamber and the State of Rhode Island for their efforts in furthering the profession of teaching, |
11 | and setting a standard worthy of all to pursue; and be it further |
12 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
13 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island Commissioner of Education. |
