CONGRATULATING AMY DIAZ FOR HER 2013 VICTORY IN THE AMAZING RACE

COMPETITION

     WHEREAS, Amy Diaz, a 2001 graduate of Classical High School, is a multi-talented,

2

beautiful and athletic individual who has excelled in a variety of endeavors in her young life

3

including dancing, yoga, modeling, acting, photography, cooking, health and fitness

4

competitions, and motivational speaking; and

5

     WHEREAS, Amy graduated cum laude at the age of 19 from Barry University with a

6

Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Communication and later graduated at the age of 22 with

7

dual Master's degrees in Business Administration and Sports Management. She was also chosen

8

Miss Rhode Island Teen USA in 2001, Miss Rhode Island USA in 2008, and Miss Earth United

9

States in 2009; and

10

     WHEREAS, In 2013, Amy Diaz, along with her partner Jason Case, were chosen to

11

participate in "The Amazing Race", a CBS reality television show in which teams of two people

12

with pre-existing relationships compete against other teams in races around the globe; and

13

     WHEREAS, Amy and Jason took part in the 23rd season of the Amazing Race, an event

14

that aired on national television from September 29, 2013 to December 8, 2013, and took place in

15

locales ranging from Chile, Portugal, Poland, Norway and Austria, to the United Arab Emirates,

16

Tokyo, Japan, Indonesia, and the United States; and

17

     WHEREAS, Amy and Jason were required to complete exotic tasks such as eating snake

18

meat in Indonesia, driving Formula One racing cars in Abu Dhabi, and building a robot in Japan.

In the first eleven legs of the Amazing Race competition, Amy and Jason were very consistent

performers, finishing second six times and first once, before emerging victorious as the overall

2

winners in the last stage in Juneau, Alaska. For all of their hard work and sacrifice, Amy and

3

Jason were rewarded with the million dollar winner's prize; and

4

     WHEREAS, Amy also devotes much of her time in support of numerous charitable

5

causes and endeavors such as the American Heart Association, Save the Bay, A Wish Come True,

6

Groundwork Providence, Breast Cancer Awareness, and AIDS Project RI as an HIV Prevention

7

Educator. In 2013, Amy was nominated for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Man & Woman

8

of the Year Award. Additionally, she raised approximately $10,000 in a ten week period to help

9

cure Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and Myeloma, and to help the patients and

10

families suffering from those diseases; now, therefore be it

11

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

12

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Amy Diaz for her victory in the 2013 Amazing Race

13

competition; and be it further

14

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

15

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Amy Diaz.
