DESIGNATING THE SECOND FULL WEEK IN MAY AS "WOMEN'S LUNG HEALTH

WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Every five minutes, a woman in the United States is told she has lung

2

cancer; and

3

     WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of women in the United States,

4

having surpassed breast cancer in 1987; and

5

     WHEREAS, The lung cancer death rate in women has more than doubled over the past

6

35 years; and

7

     WHEREAS, Women are disproportionally burdened with COPD compared to men in

8

terms of illness and death; and

9

     WHEREAS, Asthma is more common in women than men; and

10

     WHEREAS, Advocacy and increased awareness will result in more and better treatment

11

for women with lung cancer, COPD, asthma, and other lung diseases and will ultimately save

12

lives; and

13

     WHEREAS, LUNG FORCE is the new national movement, led by the American Lung

14

Association, with the mission of making lung cancer and lung disease history and uniting women

15

to stand together with a collective strength and determination to lead the fight against lung cancer

16

and for lung health; now, therefore be it

17

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

18

Providence Plantations hereby designates the second full week in May as "Women's Lung Health

19

Week" throughout Rhode Island. During this week in 2014, the Rhode Island State House will be

illuminated in turquoise to honor Women's Lung Health Week, and we encourage all the residents

2

of the state to learn more about the detection and treatment of lung cancer and all lung disease;

3

and be it further

4

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

5

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Ed Miller, Senior Vice President, Public

6

Policy, American Lung Association of the Northeast.
