PROCLAIMING MAY 22, 2014, TO BE "MANUFACTURING DAY" IN RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, Rhode Island's Slater Mill, a wooden building completed in 1793 for the |
2 | purpose of manufacturing cotton yarn by waterpower, revolutionized industry in America. It |
3 | became the first successful factory in the United States and made Rhode Island the birthplace of |
4 | the Industrial Revolution; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Manufacturing currently accounts for about 7.6 percent of the total |
6 | economic output for the State of Rhode Island, and employs approximately 40,000 people which |
7 | accounts for about 8.8 percent of the state's workforce. Total manufacturing output in Rhode |
8 | Island is approximately 4 billion dollars and compensation for a manufacturing job in the state is |
9 | close to 37 percent higher than other nonfarm jobs; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Manufacturing jobs today are not the same low skill jobs of the past. |
11 | Manufacturing jobs currently require people who are highly skilled, educated, innovative |
12 | thinkers, and able to adapt to rapidly changing technology and learning how to use new |
13 | equipment at a rapid pace; and |
14 | WHEREAS, The manufacturing sector of an economy is often a leading indicator of the |
15 | relative strength or weakness of the economy at large. It is a vital component of a prosperous, |
16 | diverse and thriving economy. Manufacturing in Rhode Island is currently prospering and |
17 | growing and we should do all we can to ensure that manufacturing remains a thriving part of the |
18 | state's economy; now, therefore be it |
19 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
20 | Providence Plantations hereby proclaims May 22, 2014, to be "Manufacturing Day" in Rhode |

2 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
