H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING MAY 23, 2014, TO BE "CAPTAIN DAVID P. SOUZA DAY" IN RHODE

ISLAND AND WISHING CAPTAIN SOUZA A MOST HAPPY RETIREMENT

     WHEREAS, Captain David P. Souza of the Woonsocket Fire Department is retiring on

May 23, 2014, after more than twenty-seven years of devoted and meritorious service to the

citizens of Woonsocket, Rhode Island; and

     WHEREAS, Captain Souza comes from a distinguished Woonsocket firefighting family.

He is the great grandson of the late Woonsocket Fire Department Captain Roy Lemieux, and is

the son of retired Woonsocket Fire Department Deputy Chief Roy Souza and Bernadette Souza.

He is married to Kimberly Souza and together they are the parents of daughter Jordan and son

Benjamin; and

     WHEREAS, Captain Souza began his firefighting career when he was appointed as a

Woonsocket firefighter on October 6, 1986. He was immediately assigned to Engine 1 and served

in that capacity until he was promoted on August 13, 2009, to be the Lieutenant of Ladder 1. He

was later appointed to the position of Captain of Ladder 2 on September 3, 2009. He also served

from 2006 to 2009 as a Union Steward and has been a proud member of C Platoon for the last ten

years; and

     WHEREAS, Captain Souza is highly regarded within the rank and file and by his

superiors for his diligent approach to his duties and for his incredibly strong work ethic. He has

been honored numerous times in his career for his selfless service in the performance of his

duties. He received the Station 1 Award for dissuading and securing a potential suicide jumper on

August 21, 2007. He also received a Commendation for successfully extricating a patient from a

vehicle that had careened off a bridge abutment and came to rest in the river below on May 7,

2011; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby proclaims May 23, 2014, to be "Captain David P. Souza Day" in

Rhode Island. We furthermore wish him a most happy retirement and continued success in all his

future endeavors; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized to transmit a duly

certified copy of this resolution to Woonsocket Fire Department Captain David P. Souza.
