H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING EAST GREENWICH HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR ANDREW MINER

FOR BEING NAMED THE 2013 NATIONAL MALE WINNER OF THE WENDY'S HIGH

SCHOOL HEISMAN AWARD

     WHEREAS, East Greenwich High School Avengers' highly celebrated athlete Andrew

Miner, son of Tom and Rosemary Miner, and a star quarterback who has set virtually every East

Greenwich High School Football passing record over the past three years, as well as also being a

star baseball player, was recently named as the Wendy's National Male High School Heisman

Award Winner in New York City; and

     WHEREAS, The Wendy's National High School Male and Female Heisman Award

competition begins annually in the early fall with an applicant pool of 46,000 youngsters from

high schools throughout the United States. The process is later reduced to twelve finalists, six

male and six female, who are brought to New York City for a weekend of activities and festivities

coinciding with the National Collegiate Heisman Award Program. In the twenty-year history of

the Wendy's program, Andrew is only the second Rhode Islander to have been selected as a

national finalist; and

     WHEREAS, Andrew Miner, in addition to being a standout athlete, is also a stellar

student. He was named an academic National Merit semi-finalist as a junior, is one of the top

students in the East Greenwich class of 2014, and has already been accepted by Harvard

University. He was the class recipient of the Harvard Book Award, and the East Greenwich

Excellence in English Award. Additionally, Andrew is an outstanding musician. He is a member

of the Rhode Island All-State Band and the Junior All-State Jazz and Concert Band. He was the

winner of the Berklee Jazz Festival Outstanding Musician and Judge's Choice Award. Andrew

has also won several writing awards; and

     WHEREAS, Andrew has been Class President at East Greenwich High School since his

sophomore year. He has organized food and coat drives for the needy, as well as a school drive

for Hurricane Sandy victims. He's also Captain of the East Greenwich Football and Baseball

teams, and a member of the school's Drama Club. As a result of Andrew winning the Wendy's

Male National High School Heisman Award, a $10,000 gift has been given to East Greenwich

High School. In addition, Andrew will receive $500 worth of Wendy's food, a gift Andrew

intends to share with his teammates; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Andrew Miner, East Greenwich High School Senior,

for being named the 2013 Wendy's National Male High School Heisman Award winner; and be it

further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Andrew and his parents, Tom and Rosemary

Miner.
