H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING DR. GARY M. PENFIELD ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Cimini, Fox, Bennett, and Hull

     WHEREAS, In a variety of capacities, over the span of more than three and a half

2

decades, Dr. Gary Penfield has inspired, motivated, enriched and entertained the lives of

3

generations of students at Rhode Island College; and

4

     WHEREAS, Since moving to Rhode Island and joining the college's staff as Dean of

5

Students in 1976, Dr. Penfield has been a shining example of how big a difference one person can

6

make in the life of another; and

7

     WHEREAS, Gary Penfield earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the State

8

University of New York at Albany. He continued his education, attaining his Doctorate at the

9

University of Cincinnati. Preceding his position at RIC, he was Dean of Student Groups and

10

University Programs at the University of Cincinnati and has also served on the Board of Directors

11

of the Providence Performing Arts Center and the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Red

12

Cross; and

13

     WHEREAS, Gifted with exceptional people and motivational skills, Dr. Penfield was

14

promoted to the position of Vice President of Student Affairs for Rhode Island College in 1979.

15

He currently holds the longest tenure of active administrators at Rhode Island College; and

16

     WHEREAS, To memorialize his myriad contributions to the betterment of Rhode Island

17

College, a fundraising campaign has been established to raise revenue to name the college's

18

newest residence hall in Dr. Penfield's honor; and

19

     WHEREAS, By virtue of his numerous and selfless accomplishments, Dr. Gary Penfield

20

serves as a model for all our educational leaders and the accomplishments and strides he has

made in the educational experience for young people in our state will be felt for generations; now,

2

therefore be it

3

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

4

Providence Plantations hereby joins his countless admirers in honoring and thanking Dr. Gary

5

Penfield and wishing him a long and happy retirement and all the very best that life has to offer;

6

and be it further

7

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

8

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Gary Penfield.
