1

WHEREAS, On February 9, 1923, in the idyllic town of Kingston, Rhode Island, Boy

2

Scout Troop 1 was founded at the Congregational Church in Kingston. 90 years later, Boy Scout

3

Troop 1 celebrated the joyous 90th Anniversary of its founding in that same Congregational

4

Church. Young boys, and some folks not-so-young, shared glowing and humorous stories about

5

scouting adventures, the Troop's commitment to the surrounding community, and how being a

6

member of Troop 1 enriched their lives and set them on the path towards being successful in life;

7

and

8

WHEREAS, Aided by the help of longtime Scout supporter and former Scoutmaster and

9

Committee Chairman Neil Ross, Troop 1 Scouts explored registration forms dating back to 1923

10

and studied old archives, which place Troop 1 as the ninth-oldest continually active troop in

11

Narragansett Council history, with February 9, 1923, as its anniversary date; and

12

WHEREAS, Kingston had only 250 residents back in 1923 and thus Troop 1 began with

13

a small group of ten scouts. Since then there have been approximately 880 registered Boy Scouts,

14

close to 100 Eagle Scouts, including its first Eagle Scout, Millard Fillmore Perry Jr., and 40

15

Scoutmasters, beginning with the Reverend Egbert W. A. Jenkins, who in 1923 was Minister of

16

Kingston Congregational Church, and volunteered to lead that initial group; and

17

WHEREAS, Also present at the celebration event honoring the 90th Anniversary of Troop

18

1 in Kingston was Warren M. Hagist, 87, another volunteer leader and thought to be the oldest

19

surviving Scoutmaster. He regaled attendees with stories about the history of Troop 1; now,

1

therefore be it

2

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

3

hereby congratulates Boy Scout Troop 1 on the joyous occasion of its 90th Anniversary; and be it

4

further

5

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

6

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Troop 1 Scoutmaster Bill Boardman.
