RELATING TO HEALTH AND SAFETY - STROKE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

ACT OF 2009

     

     Introduced By: Senators Doyle, Nesselbush, Ottiano, Cool Rumsey, and Goodwin

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Section 23-78.1-4 of the General Laws in Chapter 23-78.1 entitled "Stroke

Prevention and Treatment Act of 2009" is hereby amended to read as follows:

     23-78.1-4. Acute care hospitals. -- (a) All acute care hospitals shall maintain readiness

4

to treat stroke patients. This shall include:

5

      (1) Adherence with American Heart Association/American Stroke Association

6

guidelines;

7

      (2) Establishment of written care protocols for the treatment of ischemic and

8

hemorrhagic stroke patients, including transfer of acute stroke patients to a primary stroke center

9

as appropriate and medically indicated;

10

      (3) Participation in Get With The Guidelines/Stroke or other national registry or database

11

to collect nationally recognized stroke measures and ensure continuous quality improvement;

12

      (4) Participation in the Rhode Island Stroke Task Force and the Stroke Coordinators

13

Network to provide oversight for the stroke system of care and to share best practices.

14

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

     This act would expand the methods by which all acute care hospitals prepare for the

treatment of stroke patients.
