S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF CHARLES H. OXX

     WHEREAS, It is with deep sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of Charles

2

H. Oxx, loving husband of 65 years to his wife, Emily, a highly respected retired patrolman for

3

the Newport Police Force, and an active and popular longtime resident of the City of Newport;

4

and

5

     WHEREAS, Charles Oxx was born in Newport, the son of Edith and Harry Oxx. He

6

served our country with honor and distinction with the United States Army during World War II,

7

where he saw action in the Pacific Theater; and

8

     WHEREAS, Upon returning from the service, Charles earned his diploma from Rogers

9

High School and soon joined the Newport Police Force as a Patrolman, a position he held for the

10

next 25 years, until his retirement in 1976; and

11

     WHEREAS, Charles was an affable jokester and easy going friend. His legions of

12

admirers included all who saw him, dressed as a Keystone cop, in the Newport Policemen's

13

annual parade, all the regulars, including Lenny, John, and Joe at Cappy's Hillside Café, and all

14

who encountered him on the tennis or basketball courts; and

15

     WHEREAS, In addition to his beloved wife, Charles is survived by his children, Valerie

16

Piner and Sandy Oxx, his loving grandchildren, Charlie, Casey, and Liza, his great-grandchildren,

17

Quinn and Cole, his best man and longtime friend, Warren, and his nephews and great-

18

grandnieces, Jan, Melinda, Earley, and Suzy; and

19

     WHEREAS, Charles Oxx touched the hearts and enriched the lives of all who had the

20

good fortune to have known him. His humor and smile will be always remembered and forever

missed; now, therefore be it

2

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

3

hereby expresses our deepest sympathies on the passing of Charles H. Oxx; and be it further

4

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

5

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mrs. Emily Oxx and Family.
