It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
1 | SECTION 1. Chapter 28-45 of the General Laws entitled "Apprenticeship Programs in |
2 | Trade and Industry" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section: |
3 | 28-45-9.2. Military service apprenticeship qualifications. – (a) Any person after |
4 | having been honorably discharged from military service or having been transferred to reserve |
5 | status or the national guard after active military service, and whose military occupational |
6 | specialty provided them with the requisite classroom and workplace training as required by the |
7 | Rhode Island general laws, or a rule or regulation promulgated pursuant to the Rhode Island |
8 | general laws, shall be eligible to use that classroom and workplace training to fulfill the |
9 | requirements for apprentices and/or journeypersons for the following skilled trades: |
10 | (1) Electricians, as defined in § 5-6-1 et seq.; |
11 | (2) Blasters, as defined in § 23-28.28-31 et seq.; |
12 | (3) Plumbers and Irrigators, as defined in § 5-20-1 et seq.; |
13 | (4) Hoisting Engineers, as defined in § 28-26-1 et seq.; and |
14 | (5) Mechanical Trades, as defined in § 28-27-1 et seq. |
15 | (b) Persons meeting any requirements through military service as described in subsection |
16 | (a) remain subject to licensing fees and examinations for the desired trade license. |
17 | (c) To the extent that any provisions contained in this section conflict with the |
18 | requirements for federal-aid contracts, federal law and regulations shall control. |

1 | This act would allow persons honorably discharged from military service, or transferred |
2 | to reserve status in the National Guard, to use his or her acquired classroom and workplace |
3 | training to fulfill the requirements for apprenticeship and/or journeypersons for the skilled trades |
4 | enumerated herein. |
5 | This act would take effect upon passage. |
