CONGRATULATING JOHN PERINO ON BEING NAMED ONE OF THE TOP TWO

YOUTH VOLUNTEERS IN RHODE ISLAND FOR 2014, IN THE 19TH ANNUAL

PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS

     WHEREAS, John Perino, an esteemed resident of Westerly and a student at Westerly

High School, has achieved national recognition for exemplary volunteer service by receiving a

2014 Prudential Spirit of Community Award; and

     WHEREAS, This prestigious award, presented by Prudential Financial in partnership

with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young volunteers across

America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities; and

     WHEREAS, John Perino earned this award by co-founding Project TGIF (Turn Grease

Into Fuel), an initiative designed to turn grease into fuel as a way to reduce CO2 emissions and to

help struggling families pay their heating bills. Approximately 4,000 gallons of used cooking oil a

month was collected from 132 restaurants in three states, and public receptacles in ten towns.

This fuel was then converted into a biofuel that heated the homes of families in need, and helped

endangered low-lying beaches by reducing CO2 emissions. Over the past five years, more than

$100,000 worth of biofuel was used to help pay the heating bills of over 200 families; and

     WHEREAS, The quality of life in the State of Rhode Island, the strength of our

communities, and the vitality of American society depend in large part upon young people like

John Perino, a young man who has given generously of his time and used his considerable talent

to make his community a better place; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby congratulates John Perino on being named one of the top two youth volunteers in Rhode

Island for 2014, in the 19th annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. We thank John for all

he has done to protect the environment and to help needy families pay their heating bills. We

wish him continued success in all future endeavors; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to John Perino.
