COMMENDING THE FOLLOWING RECIPIENTS OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL

OF RHODE ISLAND EDUCATION FUND'S JOHN H. CHAFEE CONSERVATION

LEADERSHIP AWARD, GIVEN BETWEEN 2000 AND 2013

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island’s environment is critical to the state’s natural beauty, wildlife,

2

public health, and economic activity; and

3

     WHEREAS, Leaders in the nonprofit, municipal government, and business communities

4

have played a key role in protecting Rhode Island’s environment and preserving this natural

5

heritage for future generations; and

6

     WHEREAS, The Environment Council of Rhode Island Education Fund educated Rhode

7

Island’s citizens about environmental health and natural resource protection and restoration; and

8

     WHEREAS, The Environmental Council of Rhode Island Education Fund’s annual John

9

H. Chafee Conservation Leadership Award honors the memory of the late Senator Chafee and his

10

dedication to protecting and preserving the natural environment; and

11

     WHEREAS, The John H. Chafee Conservation Leadership Awards celebrate their

12

fifteenth year in 2014; and

13

     WHEREAS, The John H. Chafee Conservation Leadership Award recognizes Rhode

14

Island organizations, municipal governments, and businesses for their efforts toward improving

15

the health of the Rhode Island environment; now, therefore be it

16

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

17

hereby commends the following recipients of the Environment Council of Rhode Island

18

Education Fund’s John H. Chafee Conservation Leadership Award between 2000 and 2013: the

19

South Kingstown Land Trust, for open space preservation; CleanScape, Inc., for commercial

recycling and landscape maintenance; the Town of Coventry, for land conservation, wetland

2

protection, and educational outreach; the City of Warwick, for its energy education and

3

management program; the Norman Bird Sanctuary, for its Third Beach land acquisition project;

4

the URI Center for Pollution Prevention; Bill’s Auto Parts, for auto parts recycling; the Little

5

Compton Agricultural Conservancy Trust; JTJ Investments, LLC, for its energy-efficient office

6

building; the Franklin Farm Preservation Association, for its community garden; Kids First, for

7

the “Rhode Island Farm Produce to School Lunch Program” in Pawtucket, Toray Industries, for

8

its corporate sustainability program; and the Aquidneck Land Trust, for Sakonnet Greenway trail

9

expansion; and be it further

10

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

11

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the above named honorees, as well as Jamie

12

Rhodes, President of the Environment Council of Rhode Island, and Meg Kerr, President of the

13

Environment Council of Rhode Island Education Fund.
