S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING THE MOUNT ST. CHARLES BOYS HOCKEY TEAM FOR WINNING

THE 2013-2014 RHODE ISLAND HIGH SCHOOL BOYS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

     WHEREAS, It was supposed to be a rebuilding season for the legendary Mount St.

2

Charles Boys Hockey Team and when Mount lost the first game of their best of three State

3

Championship series to Hendricken, and fell behind 3-1 in the second game, it certainly appeared

4

that the Mounties were not going to add another championship trophy to their already stuffed

5

trophy case; and

6

     WHEREAS, However, champions always seem to have an abundance of grit and a

7

refusal to quit attitude, and Mount St. Charles proved that axiom to be true as they mounted a

8

comeback for the ages and stormed back to win the State Championship and add yet another

9

Championship to their illustrious hockey heritage; and

10

     WHEREAS, In a do or die situation in game two, the Mounties fell behind 3-1 in the

11

third period with time running out for them. However, shortly after falling two goals back, the

12

Mounties staged a magnificent comeback. They regained the momentum when Marc Squizzero

13

cut the lead to one, putting the puck into the upper left corner of the net. About five minutes later,

14

with the pressure building, freshman Tim Casilli tied the game when he fired a rocket from the

15

point that also reached the upper left part of the net. At the same time, Mountie goalie Brian

16

Larence played phenomenal hockey, consistently making clutch saves to keep Mount St. Charles

17

in the game; and

18

     WHEREAS, In a tense overtime that saw the play go back and forth, star Junior

19

Defenseman Keith Phaneuf settled the issue when he blasted a shot from about 30 feet away into

the upper right corner of the net. Mount had somehow survived to force a decisive game three to

2

be played in Meehan Auditorium at Brown University; and

3

     WHEREAS, Mount St. Charles won game three of the Championship Series in

4

dominating fashion, jumping out to 4-0 and 5-1 leads. Mount was led by the scoring of Thomas

5

Crudele, who scored two goals, and by the scoring of Justin D’Abrosca, Patrick Holmes, and

6

Marc Squizzero. Once again Brian Larence was outstanding in net and for his efforts in this

7

series, Larence was chosen the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player; and

8

     WHEREAS, Winning a State Championship in any team sport is impossible unless every

9

member of a team is completely dedicated towards the proposition that the team comes first and

10

individual laurels take second place. The 2013-2014 Mount St. Charles Boys Hockey team had an

11

abundance of those kinds of players with Brett Simoneau, Daniel Allen, Kevin Valentine, Jack

12

Boisvert, Captain Marc Squizzero, Patrick Holmes, Henry Alienello, Tom Crudele, Bill Burns,

13

Cameron Tedford, Justin D’Abrosca, Colin Cannata, Tim Casilli, Jacob Glod, Ryan Badeau, Joe

14

Sanchioni, Keith Phaneuf, Jack O’Donnell, Tyler Rudek, Justin Trindade, Ryan Cannata, Drew

15

St. Germain, Captain Brian Larence, Jake Martin, Zachery Noke, Zachery Vanasse and Nick

16

Manousos consistently giving everything they had in support of the team and its goals; and

17

     WHEREAS, The Boys Mount St. Charles Hockey Team was led by the sterling coaching

18

of Normand “Bill” Belisle, who incredibly won his 32nd State Title, and was additionally aided

19

enormously by the leadership and astute coaching provided by Co-Head Coach Dave Belisle, and

20

Assistant Coaches Paul Guay, Peter Capizzo, and Matt Merten; now, therefore be it

21

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

22

hereby congratulates the Mount St. Charles Boys Hockey Team on winning the 2013-2014 Boys

23

Hockey State Championship; and be it further

24

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

25

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Coaches Normand “Bill” Belisle and Dave

26

Belisle.
