S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

SUPPORTING UNITED STATES SENATE RESOLUTION 378 AND CONDEMNING

RUSSIAN MILITARY AGGRESSION AGAINST UKRAINE

     WHEREAS, Rhode Islanders are eminently proud and fiercely protective of individuals'

2

freedoms and human rights; and as a nation we espouse our obligation to provide the leadership,

3

support, and the necessary strength to uphold our global responsibilities and defend and safeguard

4

the rights of people from all nations; and 

5

     WHEREAS, In a clear and unprovoked violation of the government of Ukraine’s

6

sovereignty and territorial integrity, Russian military forces breached international law and

7

infringed on Ukraine's state border; and

8

     WHEREAS, The continued occupation of Crimea constitutes a serious threat to peaceful

9

and democratic development of the region, as well as to global security and stability; and

10

     WHEREAS, Nations and governments around the globe have called on Russia to

11

immediately withdraw its troops to the areas where they were permanently stationed on the basis

12

of bilateral agreements for armed forces stationed in Crimea; and

13

     WHEREAS, Senate Resolution 378, introduced in the United States Senate on March 11th

14

of 2014, entitled "A resolution condemning illegal Russian aggression in Ukraine" calls for "swift

15

and significant consequences" and the use of "appropriate economic and diplomatic measures

16

against those responsible for the illegal seizure of Crimea"; now, therefore be it

17

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

18

hereby strongly supports United States Senate Resolution 378 and condemns Russian military

19

aggression against Ukraine; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to President Barack Obama, and Rhode Island's

3

Congressional Delegation.
