3

of those whose lives were tragically altered by the events of April 15, 2013; and

4

WHEREAS, On April 15, 2013, at approximately 2:50 p.m., two bombs exploded on

5

Boylston Street near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing and injuring innocent people.

What should have been a day of celebration and triumph turned instead to mayhem and

WHEREAS, This cowardly act of terrorism reminded all of us that there are those in our

world who do not believe in the ideals of freedom and liberty. In the midst and aftermath of this

11

horrific attack, we witnessed just how resilient and enduring our democratic society is when it is

12

attacked. We saw first responders and volunteers risking their lives to race towards those who

were injured and in need of immediate help. We witnessed the enormous strength and courage of

14

those wounded in this attack as they, with the help of numerous dedicated and talented medical

15

professionals, worked tirelessly to physically recover as much as possible from their wounds and

16

to rebuild their lives. Finally, we watched an entire community, from ordinary citizens to famous

17

baseball players, rally around the victims of this attack and offer all of their support and

1

encouragement; and

2

WHEREAS, While the immediate threat stemming from the bombings has ended, the

3

grieving period for many of the families who lost their loved ones will continue, and the healing

process for some who were injured during the tragic events remains an on-going reality; now,

5

therefore be it

6

RESOLVED, This this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

7

hereby commemorates the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing. We thank the

8

first responders and volunteers for their bravery in coming to the aid of the injured, and we

9

express our deepest sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in this attack, and to

10

those who suffered injuries on the fateful day of April 15, 2013; and be it further

11
