S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING THE ALPHA RHO CHAPTER OF TAU KAPPA EPSILON IN

RECOGNITION OF THEIR INSTALLATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity was founded on January 10, 1899, at

2

Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois. It currently has over 270 active chapters

3

and colonies throughout the United States and Canada. Throughout its distinguished history,

4

approximately 260,000 men have been members, including United States President Ronald

5

Reagan; and

6

     WHEREAS, Tau Kappa Epsilon can be most proud of the fact that it has never allowed

7

discrimination in its recruitment practices against race, religion or national origin, even during

8

periods in American history when such practices were legal and accepted by large sections of the

9

American public; and

10

     WHEREAS, The Alpha Rho Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon has recently been established

11

at the University of Rhode Island and in its short existence it has already made its presence

12

known on campus and in the community through its charitable work and fundraising; and

13

     WHEREAS, Some of their notable charitable events have included hosting a fundraiser

14

for the One Fund in response to the Boston Marathon bombing, raising over $1,000 for St. Jude's

15

Children's Hospital, volunteering in support of the Holy Ground Tabernacle Soup Kitchen in

16

Providence, raising over $ 1,000 in the "Run for Reagan" fundraiser to fight Alzheimer's disease,

17

and raising over $ 3,500 in support of Habitat for Humanity. Altogether, the Alpha Rho Chapter

18

of Tau Kappa Epsilon has contributed over 1,000 hours of community service in 2013, and has

19

thus far in 2014 contributed over 500 hours of service in the community, supporting various

cleanup projects and aiding numerous soup kitchens. They have proven to be a positive presence

2

on the University of Rhode Island campus and have become a vital contributor to many charitable

3

enterprises within their community; now, therefore be it

4

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

5

hereby congratulates the Alpha Rho Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon in recognition of their

6

installation at the University of Rhode Island; and be it further

7

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

8

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the President of the Alpha Rho Chapter of Tau

9

Kappa Epsilon, Phillipp Ricciotti.
