     STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2014

____________

S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING THE ROGERS HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM ON

WINNING THE 2013-2014 RHODE ISLAND GIRLS BASKETBALL DIVISION II

CHAMPIONSHIP

Introduced By: Senators Paiva Weed, Goodwin, Felag, Metts, and Conley

     Date Introduced: May 15, 2014

Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration

1

WHEREAS, In a battle of the unbeatens, Rogers High School, led by Tri-Captain Josie

2

Chaves' 24 points and MVP performance, won going away and defeated St. Raphael High School

3

by the score of 55-32 in the State Title game; and

4

WHEREAS, The Rogers High School Girls team compiled a perfect regular season

5

record with a 16-0 record and easily won the Eastern Division. Known for their unselfish team

6

play, mental toughness, disciplined offense and tenacious ball-hawking defense, Rogers entered

7

the playoffs on a roll and anticipated an ultimate meeting with fellow unbeaten St. Raphael

8

Saints; and

9

WHEREAS, Rogers easily dispatched Warwick Vets in the first round of the state

10

playoffs by a score of 57-26. In the quarterfinals, Rogers once again won handily, defeating East

11

Greenwich 60-39. In the semi-finals, Rogers faced South Division Champions Coventry and won

12

a hard fought contest by the score of 56-48, setting up a much anticipated championship game

13

between St Raphael and Rogers; and

14

WHEREAS, Playing with a refuse to lose attitude, Rogers came out swinging and, led by

15

a 15-2 run, took an early halftime lead of 30-21. In the second half, Rogers' zone defense

16

continued to stymie St Ray's offense and Senior Josie Chaves, who had suffered two ACL knee

17

injuries earlier in her career, played the game of her life, scoring big baskets when needed, and

18

providing much needed grit and leadership. A 13-2 run in the second half put the game away and

19

Rogers now reigns as the Division II Girls Basketball Rhode Island State Champions; and

1

WHEREAS, Winning a state title in a team sport is a most difficult accomplishment. It

2

requires a roster in which every single player is willing to put individual needs and

3

accomplishments aside in favor of focusing completely on, and giving their all towards, the

4

completion of team goals. The Rogers High School team is blessed to have a team in which every

5

young lady gave everything she had to fulfill their goal of winning a state title. The Rogers team

6

could not have won the championship without the contributions of Captain Elizabeth L. Jackson,

7

Captain Josie Chaves, Captain Brianne Morgera, and players Quiara Brooks, Marlen Oliva,

8

Maeve Byrne, Shay Greenman, Juliana DiMeglio, Eliza Lopes, Sarah Morris, Natassia Russell,

9

Aliyah Jones, Zhana Brown, Amanda Estrella, and Khadesha Stubbs, along with the vital

10

leadership and innovative teaching provided by the coaching staff, led by Head Coach Frank

11

Brow, and Assistant Coaches Kevin Chaves, Emily Zilly, and Erin Wood; now, therefore be it

12

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

13

hereby congratulates the Rogers Girls Basketball Team on winning the 2013-2014 Rhode Island

14

Girls Basketball Division II Championship; and be it further

15

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

16

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Rogers High School Girls Basketball Head

17

Coach Frank Brow.
