CONGRATULATING THE ROGERS HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM ON | |
WINNING THE 2013-2014 RHODE ISLAND GIRLS BASKETBALL DIVISION II | |

1 | WHEREAS, In a battle of the unbeatens, Rogers High School, led by Tri-Captain Josie |
2 | Chaves' 24 points and MVP performance, won going away and defeated St. Raphael High School |
3 | by the score of 55-32 in the State Title game; and |
4 | WHEREAS, The Rogers High School Girls team compiled a perfect regular season |
5 | record with a 16-0 record and easily won the Eastern Division. Known for their unselfish team |
6 | play, mental toughness, disciplined offense and tenacious ball-hawking defense, Rogers entered |
7 | the playoffs on a roll and anticipated an ultimate meeting with fellow unbeaten St. Raphael |
8 | Saints; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Rogers easily dispatched Warwick Vets in the first round of the state |
10 | playoffs by a score of 57-26. In the quarterfinals, Rogers once again won handily, defeating East |
11 | Greenwich 60-39. In the semi-finals, Rogers faced South Division Champions Coventry and won |
12 | a hard fought contest by the score of 56-48, setting up a much anticipated championship game |
13 | between St Raphael and Rogers; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Playing with a refuse to lose attitude, Rogers came out swinging and, led by |
15 | a 15-2 run, took an early halftime lead of 30-21. In the second half, Rogers' zone defense |
16 | continued to stymie St Ray's offense and Senior Josie Chaves, who had suffered two ACL knee |
17 | injuries earlier in her career, played the game of her life, scoring big baskets when needed, and |
18 | providing much needed grit and leadership. A 13-2 run in the second half put the game away and |
19 | Rogers now reigns as the Division II Girls Basketball Rhode Island State Champions; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Winning a state title in a team sport is a most difficult accomplishment. It |
2 | requires a roster in which every single player is willing to put individual needs and |
3 | accomplishments aside in favor of focusing completely on, and giving their all towards, the |
4 | completion of team goals. The Rogers High School team is blessed to have a team in which every |
5 | young lady gave everything she had to fulfill their goal of winning a state title. The Rogers team |
6 | could not have won the championship without the contributions of Captain Elizabeth L. Jackson, |
7 | Captain Josie Chaves, Captain Brianne Morgera, and players Quiara Brooks, Marlen Oliva, |
8 | Maeve Byrne, Shay Greenman, Juliana DiMeglio, Eliza Lopes, Sarah Morris, Natassia Russell, |
9 | Aliyah Jones, Zhana Brown, Amanda Estrella, and Khadesha Stubbs, along with the vital |
10 | leadership and innovative teaching provided by the coaching staff, led by Head Coach Frank |
11 | Brow, and Assistant Coaches Kevin Chaves, Emily Zilly, and Erin Wood; now, therefore be it |
12 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
13 | hereby congratulates the Rogers Girls Basketball Team on winning the 2013-2014 Rhode Island |
14 | Girls Basketball Division II Championship; and be it further |
15 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
16 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Rogers High School Girls Basketball Head |
