COMMENDING JOHN WILLIAM SHERMAN UPON ACHIEVING SCOUTING'S MOST | |
DISTINGUISHED HONOR, THE RANK OF EAGLE SCOUT | |

1 | WHEREAS, Earning an Eagle Scout Badge is the pinnacle of achievement with the Boy |
2 | Scouts of America. It is an exceptional distinction achieved by fewer than five percent of all the |
3 | young men who enter scouting; and |
4 | WHEREAS, John William Sherman is a remarkable young man worthy of this |
5 | prestigious achievement. He began his distinguished scouting career when he joined the Cub |
6 | Scouts in 2002. He became a member of the Boy Scouts in 2007, when he joined Troop 66 |
7 | Garden City; and |
8 | WHEREAS, John has been awarded numerous awards and honors from the Cub Scouts |
9 | and the Boy Scouts. As a Cub Scout, he earned the Webelos Award and the Arrow of Light |
10 | Award. As a Boy Scout, he served as Patrol Leader for two years, as a Guide for one year, and as |
11 | an assistant Patrol Leader for one year. Additionally, he earned numerous merit badges as a Boy |
12 | Scout in a variety of categories including Art, Camping, Carpentry (2010 Historical), Citizenship |
13 | in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Communications, |
14 | Environmental Science, Family Life, Finger Painting, First Aid, Fishing, Forestry, Hiking, |
15 | Leatherwork, Lifesaving, Pathfinding (2010 Historical), Personal Fitness, Personal Management, |
16 | Public Speaking, Railroading, Swimming, and Tracking (2010 Historical), and |
17 | WHEREAS, As the highlight of his scouting years, and to complete the final step toward |
18 | obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout, John collected E-Waste for Goodwill Industries. He sent out |
19 | fliers to members of the scouting family, friends, and people in the neighborhood warning of the |

1 | danger to the environment of unwanted electronics not being properly disposed. He also had a |
2 | drop-off container placed in the community to allow people to conveniently and safely get rid of |
3 | unwanted electronics. Amongst the many items that were collected were computers, laptops, |
4 | keyboards, servers, cables, wires, printers, cell phones, television monitors and much more; and |
5 | WHEREAS, John is also an outstanding high school student and athlete. He currently |
6 | maintains an impressive 4.08 grade point average. He has earned 1st Team honors in soccer and |
7 | volleyball and was chosen to be Team Captain in both sports. His club soccer team won the 2013 |
8 | Rhode Island State Club Championship. In addition, John was awarded the Ad Altare Dei Award |
9 | and the Pope Pius Award in 2010; now, therefore be it |
10 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
11 | hereby honors and congratulates John William Sherman for all he has done to attain the rank of |
12 | Eagle Scout. We furthermore extend our deepest appreciation for his service to the community |
13 | and for setting a high standard of commitment, dedication and excellence by which the youth of |
14 | this state may follow; and be it further |
15 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
16 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to John William Sherman. |
