HONORING SENATOR DAVID E. BATES FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE | |
STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, To the immense good fortune of the people of the Town of Barrington, |
2 | David E. Bates chose a life path that incorporated both his aspirations and his extensive aptitude |
3 | for public service; and |
4 | WHEREAS, David Bates earned his Bachelor's degree in English from the University of |
5 | Massachusetts at Amherst. His employment experience includes working as a claims adjuster |
6 | and Supervisor for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, as a Marketing Representative for the |
7 | Reliance Insurance Company, and currently, as the President and Marketing Representative for |
8 | the A. N. Nunes Insurance Agency; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Senator Bates began his public service to the people of Barrington as a |
10 | member of the Barrington Planning Board in 1970. He subsequently won a seat on the Barrington |
11 | Town Council, where he served for the next decade, presiding over the Council for four years as |
12 | President; and |
13 | WHEREAS, In November of 1992, the Honorable David E. Bates was elected to the |
14 | Rhode Island Senate. He currently represents District 32 and serves as the Deputy Leader of the |
15 | Republican Caucus. In addition, he is the Secretary of the Senate Committee on Special |
16 | Legislation & Veterans' Affairs, and is a member of the Senate Committee on Commerce |
17 | Member, the Senate Committee on Environment & Agriculture, the Senate Committee on |
18 | Finance, and the Senate Committee on Rules; and |
19 | WHEREAS, In his eleven terms as a State Senator, the Honorable David Bates was the |

1 | driving force behind many important pieces of legislation, including initiatives to protect children |
2 | from predators; landmark legislation enabling the collection of DNA samples from perpetrators of |
3 | violent crimes; and eliminating the master lever option from elections, to name just a few. He was |
4 | also essential in helping the Senate understand the intricacies of complex insurance regulations; |
5 | and |
6 | WHEREAS, Actively involved in a panoply of community and professional |
7 | organizations, Senator Bates is a member of the Barrington Republican Town Committee and the |
8 | Independent Insurance Agents of America. He also served as Past President and is a member of |
9 | the Independent Insurance Agents of Rhode Island and Bristol Rotary Club; and |
10 | WHEREAS, A truly valued member of the Rhode Island Senate, the Honorable David |
11 | Bates' has consistently demonstrated an abiding dedication to serving the best interests of his |
12 | constituents. His leadership and tireless devotion to the citizens of the Ocean State have earned |
13 | him our unqualified admiration and respect, and he will most assuredly be missed; now, therefore |
14 | be it |
15 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
16 | hereby joins the family and many friends of Senator David Bates in recognizing and celebrating |
17 | his inspirational career of service to the people of the State of Rhode Island. We, moreover, wish |
18 | the Honorable David Bates continued success, happiness and fulfillment in all his future |
19 | endeavors; and be it further |
20 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
21 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable David E. Bates. |
