RELATING TO MOTOR AND OTHER VEHICLES - REGISTRATION OF VEHICLES | |

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
1 | SECTION 1. Section 31-3-33 of the General Laws in Chapter 31-3 entitled "Registration |
2 | of Vehicles" is hereby amended to read as follows: |
3 | 31-3-33. Renewal of registration. -- (a) Application for renewal of a vehicle registration |
4 | shall be made by the owner on a proper application form and by payment of the registration fee |
5 | for the vehicle as provided by law. |
6 | (b) The division of motor vehicles may receive applications for renewal of registration, |
7 | and may grant the renewal and issue new registration cards and plates at any time prior to |
8 | expiration of registration. |
9 | (c) Upon renewal, owners will be issued a renewal sticker for each registration plate |
10 | which shall be placed at the bottom right hand corner of the plate. Owners shall be issued a new |
11 | fully reflective plate beginning September 1, 2015 2017 at the time of initial registration or at the |
12 | renewal of an existing registration and reissuance will be conducted no less than every ten (10) |
13 | years. |
14 | (d) Commencing with the reissuance of plates beginning September 1, 2017, owners shall |
15 | have the option of retaining their current plates or returning their plates for the new fully |
16 | reflective plates issued by the division of motor vehicles pursuant to rules and regulations to be |
17 | promulgated by the administrator of the division of motor vehicles in accordance with ยง 31-3-28 |
18 | and subject to approval by the governor and publication at least once in each county of the state |
19 | before becoming effective. |

1 | (e) The retained plates must be readable from a distance of one hundred feet (100') away |
2 | during daylight and retain their reflective coating or paint for the retained plates to pass the yearly |
3 | required state safety inspection. |
4 | SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |
