EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO THE CASTRO FAMILY ON THE PASSING | |
OF VASCO CASTRO, JR. | |

1 | WHEREAS, Vasco Castro, Jr., was a lifelong resident of Bristol, Rhode Island. He was a |
2 | son of the late Vasco Castro, Sr., and Adeline (Valente) Castro, and brother of the late John |
3 | Castro; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Mr. Castro was a meat cutter by trade, working as an Assistant Meat |
5 | Manager at Stop & Shop for thirty-two years. He also served our nation and state with honor and |
6 | integrity as a member of the Rhode Island National Guard, Battery C, 243rd Anti-Aircraft |
7 | Artillery Weapons Battalion for ten years; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Mr. Castro, throughout his life, had been very active in civic and volunteer |
9 | endeavors within the Bristol community. He was a founding member of the Bristol Junior |
10 | Chamber of Commerce, where he held the office of Treasurer, the Knights of Corte Reis, and the |
11 | Bristol Hall of Fame; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Mr. Castro had lived in the Hopeworth neighborhood for fifty-five years. He |
13 | was a past president of the Community Association and was known as the "Mayor of |
14 | Hopeworth." A beloved figure in his community, Vasco was a regular fixture on the bocce court |
15 | and head chef for the annual steak and chicken barbeque. He was always a jovial figure, ready to |
16 | lighten the mood with good jokes and a hearty laugh and was typically the first person to |
17 | welcome new families to the neighborhood; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Mr. Castro was a lifelong sports fan. He was past President of the Bristol |
19 | High School Parents for Hockey, Bristol High School Parents for Football and a coach for both |

1 | the Bristol Football Mustangs and the King Phillip Little League. He received a Certificate of |
2 | Appreciation from "People to People of Rhode Island" for his work in broadening international |
3 | sports activities. He and his wife, Jane, received recognition for their volunteer work from the |
4 | Roger Williams College (now University) Athletic Department. A particular passion of his, and |
5 | his wife, was their love for Providence College basketball. They were named the Providence |
6 | College "fans of the year" in 1998-1999. To the dismay of many, he was also an avid New York |
7 | Yankees fan; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Vasco Castro, Jr., leaves behind his wife of sixty years, Jane (Perry) Castro, |
9 | and their two sons and their spouses, Vasco III (Skip) and his wife, Lori, and Robert P. and his |
10 | wife, Montserrat. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Vasco IV (Tad), Gabriella, and Nil, |
11 | one great-granddaughter, Leah Marie, two step granddaughters, Sara and Katelyn, and many |
12 | nieces and nephews; now, therefore be it |
13 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
14 | Providence Plantations hereby expresses deepest condolences to the Castro Family on the passing |
15 | of Vasco Castro, Jr.; and be it further |
16 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
17 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Jane Castro. |
