HONORING AND CONGRATULATING DR. ISADORE S. RAMOS, JR., ON BEING | |
SELECTED AS THE 2015 RECIPIENT OF THE "LIVING THE DREAM" AWARD | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission has unanimously |
2 | selected Dr. Isadore S. Ramos, Jr., as the 2015 "Living the Dream" Award recipient; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Dr. Ramos was the first Cape Verdean mayor in the United States, and the |
4 | first teacher of color at East Providence High School, but more importantly, he is a truly good and |
5 | kind man whose "give back" approach to life upholds the principles and emulates the legacy of |
6 | the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Izzy" by his family and many friends, Dr. Ramos |
8 | earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree in education from the University of Southern Illinois, a |
9 | certificate of administration from Rhode Island College, and a doctorate from the University of |
10 | Connecticut. He is a longtime resident of the City of East Providence and for thirty-five years |
11 | had been an educator, coach, dean of students and vice principal at the city's high school, and |
12 | served as the school department's assistant superintendent before retiring in 2000; and |
13 | WHEREAS, In addition to his educational career, Dr. Ramos was elected to serve on the |
14 | East Providence School Committee and was twice elected to the City Council. During his second |
15 | term, his fellow council members elected him Mayor. In addition, he has been honored with a |
16 | plethora of awards throughout his lifetime, and has been active in a multitude of cultural and civic |
17 | organizations, too many to list; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Over the years, Dr. Ramos earned the unqualified admiration and respect of |
19 | those he has taught, worked with, or helped in myriad ways. He has lived through many forms of |

1 | segregation and the frustrations, pain, and intractable challenges of racism, but has always taken |
2 | the noble path of peace, tolerance, and hard work; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Dr. Isadore S. Ramos is a man who has the ability to uplift others around |
4 | him making them better people and making the world a better place for those who follow the |
5 | dream of a brighter tomorrow; now, therefore be it |
6 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
7 | Providence Plantations hereby honors and congratulates Dr. Isadore S. Ramos, Jr., on being the |
8 | recipient of the 2015 "Living the Dream" Award. We can think of no one who deserves this |
9 | distinction more than Izzy, and wish him the very best of health and happiness in all his future |
10 | endeavors; and be it further |
11 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
12 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Isadore S. Ramos, Jr. |
