STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |
IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY | |
JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2015
____________ | |
H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N | |
CONGRATULATING GEORGE P. FOGARTY, JR. FOR HAVING THE CAFETERIA AT
NATIONAL GRID’S MELROSE STREET FACILITY NAMED IN HIS HONOR
| |
Introduced By: Representatives Fogarty, Hull, Handy, Amore, and Casey
Date Introduced: March 05, 2015
Referred To: House read and passed
1 | WHEREAS, George "Bing" Fogarty began his career with Narragansett Electric in 1950 |
2 | as a laborer at the Manchester Street Power Station, and soon thereafter became involved with the |
3 | union; and |
4 | WHEREAS, In 1953, Bing was elected as the Secretary of Local 310 of the Brotherhood |
5 | of Utility Workers of New England, and in the succeeding fifty-five years Bing never lost an |
6 | election in which he was a candidate; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Over the course of his career, Bing served his brothers and sisters in a |
8 | myriad of local and national positions, retiring in 2008 as the National Organizer/Representative |
9 | of the Utility Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO, and the Staff Representative for the BUW, |
10 | New England; and |
11 | WHEREAS, In the years that have passed since he first walked through the gates at |
12 | Manchester Street, there have been many changes to the company where he once worked, the |
13 | industry in which he was much involved, and the union movement that he cared so much about. |
14 | Yet, for sixty-two years Bing remained the one constant all parties could go to for an honest |
15 | assessment of the situation, a history lesson, a story supporting his reasoning, and, of course, just |
16 | a little bit of harassment; and |
17 | WHEREAS, After a long and distinguished career of sitting across the table from |
18 | management, it is only fitting that National Grid name its newly renovated cafeteria in |
19 | recognition of all that George "Bing" Fogarty has done to improve the livelihood of union |
| |
1 | members and managers alike; and |
2 | WHEREAS, The fact that National Grid chose, today, to honor a longtime union official |
3 | whose interests often clashed with theirs is a testament to the high regard in which Bing is held; |
4 | and |
5 | WHEREAS, From this day forward, all persons entering this room will be reminded that |
6 | when honorable people are involved and the contentiousness of the adversarial process can be put |
7 | aside, then it is possible for the Union and Company to come together to better serve the people |
8 | of Rhode Island, and to build a stronger National Grid; now, therefore be it |
9 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
10 | Providence Plantations hereby congratulates George "Bing" Fogarty, on having the cafeteria at |
11 | National Grid's Melrose Street facility named in his honor; and be it further |
12 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
13 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to George P. Fogarty, Jr. |
