H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING JUDITH A. LUNDSTEN, CRANSTON SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT,

ON HER RETIREMENT AFTER THIRTY-THREE YEARS OF DEVOTED AND

EXEMPLARY SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF CRANSTON

     WHEREAS, Judith A. Lundsten is retiring as the Cranston School Superintendent after

thirty-three years of dedicated service to the citizens and students of the City of Cranston. She

served twenty-five of those years as an educator, teaching the visually impaired, and later served

as a Teacher Leader, Principal, Executive Director of Educational Programs & Services, Assistant

Superintendent, and finally, as Superintendent; and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Lundsten attained a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from

the State University College at Oneonta, New York, a Master's degree in Special Education from

Vanderbilt University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Johnson & Wales University;

and

     WHEREAS, Ms. Lundsten was chosen to be the Superintendent of the Cranston Public

Schools in 2012. She inherited this position during a tumultuous time with the district facing

budget shortages and future debt repayment obligations. Confronting this difficult task, she was

able to find consensus-building solutions and her compassionate and soft-spoken leadership style

was widely admired by the constituency she served. Ms. Lundsten will leave big shoes to fill and

her grace and extraordinary leadership skills will be sorely missed by the entire Cranston

community; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Judith A. Lundsten on her retirement as the Cranston

School Superintendent after thirty-three years of devoted and exemplary service to the citizens of

Cranston; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Judith A. Lundsten.
