CONGRATULATING THE JOHNSTON/NORTH PROVIDENCE BOYS CO-OP HOCKEY | |
TEAM ON WINNING THE RHODE ISLAND DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIP | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Johnston/North Providence Boys co-op hockey team entered the Rhode |
2 | Island Division III playoffs as decided underdogs, but they managed to play their best hockey at |
3 | just the right time as they stormed through the playoffs compiling a 6-1 record, and won their |
4 | second Division III Title in five years; and |
5 | WHEREAS, In the state finals, they faced the Tournament favorites, West |
6 | Warwick/Exeter-West Greenwich, in a best of three series. After winning the first game 3-1, |
7 | Johnston/North Providence found themselves down a goal with less than two minutes left in the |
8 | second game. In a thrilling finish, they came from behind to win the second game and the state |
9 | title by scoring two goals in less than a minute. Sam DaCosta scored on a rebound shot with only |
10 | 1:32 left in the game to tie the score. His clutch goal was his ninth goal of the playoffs. Shortly |
11 | thereafter, with only 59.1 seconds left on the game clock, freshman Brandon Tanguay notched the |
12 | game winning goal, also on a rebound, to wrap up the state title for his squad; and |
13 | WHEREAS, The Johnston/North Providence team was led in the playoffs by the |
14 | outstanding play provided by goalie Dave Kelly, who stopped 63 of the 65 shots he faced in the |
15 | state finals. For his efforts, he was awarded the Rev. Robert C. Newbold Most Valuable Player |
16 | Award; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Winning a state title in a team sport requires that every member of the team |
18 | be completely devoted to putting team goals ahead of individual goals. The Johnston/North |
19 | Providence Boys co-op hockey team had these kinds of players in abundance as they were aided |

2 | Threshier, Amara Gibau, Theron Papineau, Andrew Costa, Mike Petracca, Sam DaCosta, Justin |
3 | Blais, Jacob McCullough, Zach Szumita, Ryan Sandbach, Andrew Costa-Curtis, Bradford |
4 | Townsend, Justin Gomes, Shawn O’Brien, Justin Harvey, Brian Iannuccillo, John Gibau, and |
5 | David Kelly. The Johnston/North Providence co-op hockey team also benefited all season from |
6 | the exemplary coaching provided by co-head coaches David Centracchio and Steve Morrison; |
7 | now, therefore be it |
8 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
9 | Providence Plantations hereby congratulates the Johnston/North Providence Boys co-op hockey |
10 | team on winning the Rhode Island Division III Championship; and be it further |
11 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
12 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Johnston/North Providence Boys co-op hockey |
13 | co-head coaches David Centracchio and Steve Morrison. |
