HONORING LIEUTENANT COLONEL CHRIS CORBETT (RETIRED) FOR HIS

EXEMPLARY SERVICE TO OUR NATION AND FOR HIS WORK WITH THE JROTC

     WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Chris Corbett (Retired) began his distinguished military

2

career on June 6, 1989, when he enlisted in the United States Army to initially serve as a Stinger

3

Gunner; and

4

     WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Corbett served overseas in Germany, Saudi Arabia,

5

Kuwait and Iraq, and he completed three combat tours. He also served in a variety of command

6

and staff positions in the Air Defense Artillery. Additionally, the United States Army allowed

7

him to teach, something he loves to do. He taught as an Assistant Professor of English at West

8

Point from 2001 to 2004, as a Professor of Military Science at the University of Akron from 2009

9

to 2011, and as a part of the Military Faculty at the Joint Forces Staff College, National Defense

10

University, from 2011 to 2012. He also served as a teacher at Wareham High School on Cape

11

Cod, from 2012 to 2013. Lieutenant Colonel Corbett retired from the United States Army after

12

more than twenty-three years of devoted and faithful service to our nation; and

13

     WHEREAS, Since 2013, Lieutenant Colonel Corbett has served as the Junior ROTC

14

Senior Army Instructor of the Hope High School Blue Wave Battalion. The JROTC's mission is

15

to motivate young people to be better citizens. Under LTC Corbett's leadership and direction, the

16

Cadets have earned the Honor Unit with Distinction designation, the Army's highest

17

accreditation, making it the only Army JROTC program in Rhode Island with this accreditation

18

rating. The cadets perform an average of over 5,000 hours of community service each year and

19

the seniors have a 95 percent graduation rate and routinely earn substantial college scholarship

aid; and

     WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Corbett earned a Bachelor's degree from (then)

3

Bridgewater State College in 1989, and a Master's degree from the University of Rhode Island in

4

2001. He is married to Susan, his wife of twenty-five years, who is a reading teacher at Bristol-

5

Warren High School, and is the father of two sons, Chris, II, a senior at West Point, and Jonathan,

6

a freshman at Wentworth Institute of Technology. He and his family are thrilled to be back living

7

in Rhode Island, where they have access to a ready supply of coffee milk, Del's lemonade, and

8

Johnny cakes; now, therefore be it

9

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

10

Providence Plantations hereby honors Lieutenant Colonel Chris Corbett (Retired) for his

11

exemplary service to our nation and for his work with the JROTC; and be it further

12

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

13

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Chris Corbett.
