COMMENDING JAN SLEE, RHODYLIGHTS, AND THE MYRIAD VOLUNTEERS AND | |
CONTRIBUTORS FOR THEIR BOUNDLESS EFFORTS TO PRESERVE RHODE ISLAND'S | |
LIGHTHOUSES | |

1 | WHEREAS, Lighthouses offer comfort and the promise of safety. They are the beacons |
2 | in a dark night that guide us home, and at one time in our state's history, there were as many as 30 |
3 | of these extraordinary structures posted along the state's expansive coastline, tucked into inlets, |
4 | and rising skyward on promontories and islands; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Rhode Island's lighthouses are "distinguished by their iconic architecture," |
6 | some built from granite quarried locally, others are wood-frame lighthouses with mansard roofs, |
7 | and some are spark plug caisson lighthouses. The oldest, the Beavertail Lighthouse, was built in |
8 | 1749, and the youngest is the Plum Beach Lighthouse, erected in 1897; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Over the decades, Rhode Island has sadly lost nine of these beautiful |
10 | lighthouses through acts of nature and economic difficulties; and |
11 | WHEREAS, In November of 2014, Jan Slee founded RhodyLights – The Rhode Island |
12 | Lighthouse Association, in order to educate, organize, and help the state and various non-profit |
13 | organization’s in their efforts to protect and preserve Rhode Island’s lighthouses; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Efforts have included building a scale model lighthouse that toured the state |
15 | including being exhibited at the Newport Visitor Center and the Rhody Preservation Awards. In |
16 | addition, Mr. Slee created a Monopoly-type board game called RhodyLightopoly, the sales from |
17 | which will be used to "generate seed money to start fundraising for lighthouse restoration"; now, |
18 | therefore be it |
19 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |

1 | Providence Plantations hereby commends Jan Slee, founder of Rhodylights, and the many friends |
2 | of our Ocean State's Lighthouses for their tireless efforts to preserve these historic Rhode Island |
3 | treasures; and be it further |
4 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
5 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Jan Slee. |
