CONGRATULATING SUSAN DONOVAN ON RECEIVING THE 2015 BRISTOL 4TH OF | |
JULY HATTIE BROWN AWARD | |

1 | WHEREAS, Susan Donovan is the recipient of the 2015 Bristol 4th of July Hattie Brown |
2 | Award for her civic commitment to the Town of Bristol. It is awarded annually at the 4th of July |
3 | Patriotic Exercises at Colt School to a "Bristolian who shows the same spirit of charity and |
4 | community service Hattie Brown was known for"; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Ms. Donovan showed an interest in community service as a young girl |
6 | growing up in Bristol, volunteering at the Rhode Island Veterans' Home and serving her |
7 | community as a member of the Girl Scouts; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Ms. Donovan has worked tirelessly through the years in support of local |
9 | Bristol charities. She served as a member of the Bristol Art Museum Board and was instrumental |
10 | in helping it to attain its own permanent space at Linden Place. In the 1980's, she worked for St. |
11 | Michael’s Church when it received a large donation, which was designed to be given to Habitat |
12 | for Humanity. However, because Habitat for Humanity at that time did not have a presence in the |
13 | Bristol area, the money was destined for Providence, until Ms. Donovan stepped in and started a |
14 | new Habitat for Humanity affiliate on the East Bay, thereby saving these funds for the local |
15 | community; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Through the years, Ms. Donovan worked with numerous other charitable |
17 | entities including Save Bristol Harbor, which prevented a liquefied natural gas facility from being |
18 | placed in Mount Hope Bay, the Bristol Warren Educational Foundation, Voices and Visions for |
19 | Bristol, and the Bristol Warren Special Olympics Team; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Ms. Donovan is married to Glenn and together they have three children, |
2 | Glenn, Colleen, and Cara. She has already passed on her passion for public service to her |
3 | children, one of whom spent a year in a Peruvian rainforest working on clean water service and |
4 | public health projects, and is currently in Bolivia working on similar projects; now, therefore be it |
5 | RESOLVED, That this General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island and Providence |
6 | Plantations hereby congratulates Susan Donovan on receiving the 2015 Bristol 4th of July Hattie |
7 | Brown Award. We thank her for her lifetime of service to her community, and wish her continued |
8 | success in all her future endeavors; and be it further |
9 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
10 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Susan Donovan. |
