H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING DR. DONALD J. FARISH ON BEING NAMED THE PATRIOTIC SPEAKER

FOR THE TOWN OF BRISTOL'S 230TH FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION

     WHEREAS, The Town of Bristol's Annual Fourth of July Celebration was established in

1785, and is the oldest continuous celebration of its kind in the United States. As a long standing

tradition, the celebration's events honor our country's independence and include a patriotic tribute

in the form of a speech. The 2015 recipient of this prestigious honor is Dr. Donald J. Farish; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Farish emigrated from Canada in 1963, to pursue his graduate

education. He earned his Bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of British Columbia, a

Master's degree in entomology from North Carolina State University, a Ph.D. in biology from

Harvard University, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri; and

     WHEREAS, In 2011, Dr. Farish was named the 10th President of Roger Williams

University. He has spent more than 40 years in higher education and is a highly regarded scientist

and author of six biology textbooks as well as numerous articles. On the national level, he has

served as on a Presidential Roundtable, organized by the National Center for Public Policy and

Higher Education, to discuss the future of higher education in the United States and locally, was

selected to lead the Executive Board of Rhode Island Campus Compact; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Farish and his wife, Maia, are prominent residents of the Town of

Bristol and are ardent supporters of the arts, as well as numerous cultural, educational and social

service organizations in the state; and

     WHEREAS, The life and accomplishments of Dr. Donald Farish have not only earned

him the title of Patriotic Speaker, but also our utmost respect and sincere admiration; now,

therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates and recognizes Dr. Donald J. Farish on being named

the Patriotic Speaker for the Town of Bristol's 4th of July celebration; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Donald J. Farish.
