HONORING DR. DONALD J. FARISH ON BEING NAMED THE PATRIOTIC SPEAKER | |
FOR THE TOWN OF BRISTOL'S 230TH FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Town of Bristol's Annual Fourth of July Celebration was established in |
2 | 1785, and is the oldest continuous celebration of its kind in the United States. As a long standing |
3 | tradition, the celebration's events honor our country's independence and include a patriotic tribute |
4 | in the form of a speech. The 2015 recipient of this prestigious honor is Dr. Donald J. Farish; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Dr. Farish emigrated from Canada in 1963, to pursue his graduate |
6 | education. He earned his Bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of British Columbia, a |
7 | Master's degree in entomology from North Carolina State University, a Ph.D. in biology from |
8 | Harvard University, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri; and |
9 | WHEREAS, In 2011, Dr. Farish was named the 10th President of Roger Williams |
10 | University. He has spent more than 40 years in higher education and is a highly regarded scientist |
11 | and author of six biology textbooks as well as numerous articles. On the national level, he has |
12 | served as on a Presidential Roundtable, organized by the National Center for Public Policy and |
13 | Higher Education, to discuss the future of higher education in the United States and locally, was |
14 | selected to lead the Executive Board of Rhode Island Campus Compact; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Dr. Farish and his wife, Maia, are prominent residents of the Town of |
16 | Bristol and are ardent supporters of the arts, as well as numerous cultural, educational and social |
17 | service organizations in the state; and |
18 | WHEREAS, The life and accomplishments of Dr. Donald Farish have not only earned |
19 | him the title of Patriotic Speaker, but also our utmost respect and sincere admiration; now, |

2 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
3 | Providence Plantations hereby congratulates and recognizes Dr. Donald J. Farish on being named |
4 | the Patriotic Speaker for the Town of Bristol's 4th of July celebration; and be it further |
5 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
6 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Donald J. Farish. |
