S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

EXPRESSING PROFOUND SYMPATHY ON THE PASSING OF JAMES F. BARON

     WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of Jim

2

Baron, an enormously well-respected political reporter for two local newspapers, The Times and

3

The Call; and

4

     WHEREAS, Jim grew up in Lincoln, Rhode Island, the son of Mary and the late Robert

5

Baron. He was the beloved husband of Denise Perreault, a former city editor for the Woonsocket

6

Call; and

7

     WHEREAS, Joining The Times in 1981, Jim's nascent career took him back to his

8

hometown of Lincoln as a correspondent on local events. In 1985, he was made a full-time

9

reporter, covering municipal government events and meetings; and

10

     WHEREAS, Over the course of his career, Jim covered a panoply of issues, eventually

11

providing full-time coverage of events at the Statehouse. In addition, he appeared on such news

12

shows as "A Lively Experiment" and "State of Mind," but was perhaps best known for his award-

13

winning weekly column, "Politics as Usual"; and

14

     WHEREAS, While Jim often relentlessly covered the issues of the day, he conducted

15

himself, posed his questions, and wrote his insights with such fairness and honesty, that he had

16

not only earned a very loyal following of readers, but also a much-admired reputation for his

17

integrity from those he covered; and

18

     WHEREAS, There is no doubt that Jim Baron, a free-thinker, a talented writer, and a true

19

gentleman, left the literary community and this state more informed and enlightened by his life’s

20

endeavors. His integrity and common sense enriched the lives of all who knew him and set a

standard for journalistic excellence that is an inspiration to us all; now, therefore be it

2

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

3

hereby expresses our deepest sympathies on the passing of James F. Baron; and be it further

4

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

5

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to his wife, Denise Perreault and his mother, Mrs.

6

Mary Baron.
