RELATING TO TAXATION - FIRE DISTRICTS LOCATED IN COVENTRY | |

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
1 | SECTION 1. Chapter 44-5 of the General Laws entitled "Levy and Assessment of Local |
2 | Taxes" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section: |
3 | 44-5-2.3. Fire districts located in Coventry - Maximum levy. -- Each fire district |
4 | located within the town of Coventry, including, but not limited to, Coventry Fire District, Central |
5 | Coventry Fire District, Hopkins Hill Fire District and Western Coventry Fire District shall be |
6 | subject to the provisions of ยง 44-5-2; provided, however that in fiscal year 2015, the maximum |
7 | levy shall be five and one-half percent (5.5%); in fiscal year 2016, the maximum levy shall be |
8 | five and one-quarter percent (5.25%); in fiscal year 2017, the maximum levy shall be five percent |
9 | (5%); in fiscal year 2018, the maximum levy shall be four and three-quarter percent (4.75%); in |
10 | fiscal year 2019, the maximum levy shall be four and one-half percent (4.5%); and in fiscal year |
11 | 2020, the maximum levy shall be four and one-quarter percent (4.25%). The amount levied by a |
12 | fire district in Coventry may exceed the percentage increase as specified in this section for the |
13 | purpose of incurring expenses for a capital expenditure, including, but not limited to, construction |
14 | of buildings or purchase or lease of fire vehicles. |
15 | SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. |

1 | This act would make any tax increases in any of the four (4) fire districts located within |
2 | the town of Coventry subject to the maximum levy sections of the general laws, after a gradual |
3 | six (6) year phase-in within exception for capital expenditures. |
4 | This act would take effect upon passage. |
