CELEBRATING "LIBRARY LEGISLATIVE AWARENESS DAY" ON FEBRUARY 10, 2015, | |

1 | WHEREAS, February 10th marks the official celebration of "Library Legislative |
2 | Awareness Day" in our state; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Literacy skills are essential for effective participation in our democracy, in |
4 | the workplace, in the community, and within family life. Evidence shows that low or minimal |
5 | literacy skills can condemn entire families to isolation, poverty and dependence; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Libraries are true beacons of democracy that strengthen our state and our |
7 | nation by preserving our nation's cultural heritage. Lady Bird Johnson once said, "Perhaps no |
8 | place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance |
9 | requirement is interest"; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Libraries empower individuals, strengthen families, and provide the |
11 | cornerstone for a brighter future for all our citizens; now, therefore be it |
12 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
13 | hereby celebrates "Library Legislative Awareness Day." We furthermore express our sincere |
14 | gratitude to those dedicated individuals who work, volunteer, and advocate for libraries across |
15 | our state; and be it further |
16 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
17 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to The Rhode Island Library Association. |
