PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 11TH OF 2015 TO BE UNITED WAY 2-1-1 DAY IN THE

STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, United Way of Rhode Island is formally commemorating National 2-1-1

2

Day on Wednesday, February 11, 2015; and   

3

     WHEREAS, Through a partnership of state agencies, nonprofit organizations and

4

corporate support United Way 2-1-1 in Rhode Island was established in 2007 to help Rhode

5

Islanders navigate a complex human services network; and

6

     WHEREAS, With more than one million calls taken so far, United Way 2-1-1 continues

7

to provide free and confidential information and referral service. Staffed by trained call

8

specialists, 2-1-1 is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and averages 200,000 calls per

9

year; and

10

     WHEREAS, 2-1-1 connects people to multiple human services, from locating childcare

11

to information on free tax assistance programs, to help for substance abuse and finding elder care

12

services; and

13

     WHEREAS, 2-1-1 plays a critical role during times of natural disasters, recently handling

14

more than 2,000 calls during the recent Juno Blizzard; and

15

     WHEREAS, United Way 2-1-1 in Rhode Island recognizes the value of strong

16

partnerships with community-based organizations and state agencies to ensure Rhode Islanders

17

can get the services they need when they need it most; now, therefore be it

18

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

19

hereby declares February 11, 2015, to be "United Way 2-1-1 Day" in Rhode Island; and be it

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

3

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Anthony Maione, President and CEO, United

4

Way of Rhode Island.
