HONORING KENNETH J. BURKE UPON ACHIEVING THE PROVIDENCE | |
ENGINEERING SOCIETY'S 2015 HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD | |

1 | WHEREAS, Individual volunteerism within our cities and towns is an essential and |
2 | valued quality that helps bind communities, organizations, and people together; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Individuals who volunteer often become role models for our youth, adding |
4 | value to everyday life and setting worthy examples for others to follow; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Kenneth J. Burke is a professional engineer who has practiced his expertise |
6 | in both the private and public engineering sectors, and is currently serving as the General |
7 | Manager of the Rhode Island Water Resources Board; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Ken has been recognized by the Providence Engineering Society, the |
9 | country's oldest professional engineering society, as their 2015 Humanitarian of the Year, an |
10 | award which is worthy of praise and acknowledgement; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Immersing himself in community volunteerism, Ken has coached youth |
12 | soccer and basketball teams in South County, served on the Butler Hospital Community |
13 | Development Committee, chaired the Board of Directors for the Welcome House of South |
14 | County, volunteered as a career speaker for the College Crusade of Rhode Island, mentored for |
15 | the Year Up Providence program, served on the South Kingstown Affordable Housing |
16 | Collaborative, volunteered for the Peace Dale and Wakefield merchants associations, as well as |
17 | numerous additional efforts; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Ken remains committed to continuing his service to his community, and his |
19 | altruism stands as a testament to the spirit of all Rhode Islanders who strive to make our state a |

1 | better place in which to live and who work towards a brighter future for generations to come; |
2 | now, therefore be it |
3 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
4 | hereby honors Kenneth J. Burke for all he has done for our state and his community and we |
5 | extend our deepest appreciation to Ken for his untiring service to the community, and for setting a |
6 | high standard of commitment and dedication by which others in this great state may follow. We |
7 | moreover extend our very best wishes for good health and happiness at his award ceremony on |
8 | February 26, 2015, and in the months and years ahead; and be it further |
9 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
10 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Kenneth J. Burke. |
