A N   A C T

RELATING TO EDUCATION -- CURRICULUM

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 16-22 of the General Laws entitled "Curriculum" is hereby

amended by adding thereto the following section:

     16-22-27. Availability of instruction in musical performance education. – All

4

secondary public schools including middle schools, or any other secondary schools managed and

5

controlled by the state, are strongly encouraged to offer as a part of the curriculum, courses in

6

performing arts, including musical ensembles, such as band, chorus, orchestra and other

7

performance ensembles, with emphasis upon development of aesthetic appreciation and the skills

8

of creative expression.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect on July 1, 2015.

EXPLANATION

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

RELATING TO EDUCATION -- CURRICULUM

     This act would encourage all public secondary schools managed or controlled by the state

2

to provide instruction in performing arts, including musical ensembles, as part of their

3

curriculum.

     This act would take effect on July 1, 2015.
