S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF FRANCIS HENRY

SMITH

     WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of Francis

2

Henry Smith, the loving husband for thirty years to Mary Ellen Smith, and the devoted father of

3

Emily Florence Smith, Patrick Henry Smith and his wife, Jillian, John Henry Smith, Matthew

4

Henry Smith, and Benjamin Henry Smith; and

5

     WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was the son of the late Robert and Thelma Smith and the brother

6

of Madonna Smith, Roberta M. Bloomer and her husband, William, and the late Marjorie

7

Garrahan. He was also the uncle of several nieces and nephews; and

8

     WHEREAS, Although born in Providence, Mr. Smith grew up in Smithfield, and was a

9

graduate of La Salle Academy. He continued his education, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree

10

from Rhode Island College, and his Master's Degree in Public Administration from Suffolk

11

University. He had been employed as the Executive Director of the Smith Hill Community

12

Development Corporation; and

13

     WHEREAS, Active in his faith, Mr. Smith was a parishioner at St. Pius V Church, and

14

during his youth, had been a member of St. Philip Church. He was a well-respected and widely-

15

admired member of the community and had spent much of his adult life volunteering and serving

16

in leadership positions for numerous nonprofit groups; and

17

      WHEREAS, Francis Smith was blessed with the love of his family and many friends,

18

and in return, he gave back to others with sincere generosity and an open heart, and he will be

19

sadly missed; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2

hereby expresses our deepest sympathies on the passing of Francis Henry Smith, and even though

3

we are diminished by this loss and mourn his passing, so must we celebrate the spirit and

4

kindness with which he lived every day of his life; and be it further

5

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

6

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Mrs. Mary Ellen Smith and family.
