RELATING TO MILITARY AFFAIRS AND DEFENSE - RHODE ISLAND VETERANS'

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Section 30-24-9 of the General Laws in Chapter 30-24 entitled "Rhode

Island Veterans' Home" is hereby amended to read as follows:

     30-24-9. Property of deceased residents. -- All goods, chattels, property, money, and

4

effects of a deceased resident of the Rhode Island veterans' home, which have not been disposed

5

of by him or her by a completed inter vivos conveyance or gift, or by a valid will, after payment

6

therefrom of the funeral expenses, which shall not exceed five thousand dollars ($5,000) ten

7

thousand dollars ($10,000), and after payment therefrom of the reasonable debts and expenses of

8

the deceased resident to be determined by rules and regulations as shall be adopted by the

9

director, shall upon his or her decease become the property of the state, and shall be applied by

10

the director of human services or his designee to the uses and purposes of the veterans' restricted

11

account; provided, however, that the director may in his or her discretion deliver to any surviving

12

relative of the deceased resident any of the property or effects as may serve as a memento of the

13

deceased resident. For purposes of this section, the provisions of chapter 24 of title 33 shall be

14

applicable.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

EXPLANATION

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

     This act would increase the permissible funeral expense for a veteran who dies at the

2

veterans' home from five thousand dollars ($5,000) to ten thousand dollars ($10,000).

3

     This act would take effect upon passage.
