CELEBRATING "NATIONAL CANCER REGISTRARS WEEK" ON APRIL 6TH THROUGH

THE 10TH, 2015, IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Cancer Registrars are health care professionals and data management

2

experts who collect and maintain data on persons diagnosed with this devastating disease; and

3

     WHEREAS, Cancer Registrars work in a variety of cancer treatment and research

4

settings and manage a wide range of demographic and medical data on those with cancer; and

5

     WHEREAS, The collected data informs cancer research, prevention, and treatment

6

programs; and

7

     WHEREAS, The information is both submitted to and utilized by state and national

8

cancer registries to enable cancer programs to accurately determine cancer patient populations,

9

measure outcomes or treatment and survival, and formulate plans for improvement; and

10

     WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Statewide Cancer Registry operates under the auspices of

11

the Hospital Association of Rhode Island (HARI), which maintains the statewide cancer registry

12

(RICR); and

13

     WHEREAS, Funded by the Rhode Island Department of Health and the National

14

Program for Cancer Registries of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HARI not only

15

collects and maintains data related to Rhode Island's cancer patient population, but also provides

16

support to hospital tumor registries and promotes the American College of Surgeons-approved

17

cancer programs in acute care hospitals throughout the state; and

18

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island has more than twenty-five cancer registrars operating across

19

the state. The information collected and compiled by these dedicated and determined

professionals is helping to improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention efforts for many Rhode

2

Islanders; now, therefore be it

3

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

4

hereby celebrates "National Cancer Registrars Week" on April 6th through April 10th, 2015. We

5

furthermore recognize and applaud the accomplishments of the Rhode Island Cancer Registry and

6

extend our gratitude for its efforts in fighting cancer in Rhode Island and across the nation; and be

7

it further

8

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

9

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Honorable Gina Raimondo, Governor of the

10

State of Rhode Island, and the Hospital Association of Rhode Island.
