CONGRATULATING BETH LARCOM ON BEING SELECTED AS A 2015 NEWPORT

DAILY NEWS COMMUNITY SERVICE OUTSTANDING YOUTH VOLUNTEER AWARD

WINNER

     WHEREAS, The Newport Daily News established a "Community Service Award" in

2

1995 on the paper's 150th Anniversary celebration in order to recognize and encourage

3

volunteerism within the community. This year marks the 20th Anniversary of its award

4

presentations; and

5

      WHEREAS, Chosen from a field of nominations, Beth Larcom, has been selected as the

6

2015 inaugural recipient of the "Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award." This prestigious award is

7

intended to recognize and encourage young adults who have already demonstrated a superb

8

commitment to volunteerism within the community; and

9

     WHEREAS, Beth comes from a large and loving family that instilled in her their deep

10

commitment to community service. As the youngest of six siblings, she has worked hard for her

11

accomplishments and there are many. Beth is a triple threat, successful in academics, athletics,

12

and community service. She is currently a junior at St. George's School in Newport and will be

13

heading to Harvard University after her senior year. She plays hockey, soccer, and lacrosse, and

14

she has logged more volunteer hours with myriad local organizations, than adults three or four

15

times her age; and

16

     WHEREAS, For almost ten years, Beth has volunteered with Middletown's Safety Town,

17

teaching safety on the roads, the water, at school, and in the home, to area kindergarteners. She

18

has coordinated the annual Middletown Pan Massachusetts Challenge bicycle race to raise money

19

in the fight against cancer, and has helped to establish a "Pink the Rink," also in support of the

fight against cancer. In addition, she has supported efforts and fundraising events for leukemia

2

and lymphoma; and

3

     WHEREAS, Beth has been described as inspirational, well-prepared, and supportive,

4

with an infectious enthusiasm, and a super sense of humor. She is a whirlwind of altruism and

5

energy, and she is truly deserving of our praise and recognition; now, therefore be it

6

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

7

hereby congratulates and honors Beth Larcom on being selected as the first 2015 Newport Daily

8

News Community Service Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award winner. We wish her good

9

health, much happiness, and continued success in all her endeavors; and be it further

10

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

11

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Beth Larcom.
