S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING CUMBERLAND HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING COACH STEVE

GORDON ON WINNING HIS 500TH DUAL-MEET

     WHEREAS, Since 1968, Steve Gordon has been a fixture in the sport of wrestling, both

in Cumberland and in the State of Rhode Island. Steve's leadership skills, ability to motivate, and

his abiding concern for the well-being of the student-athletes in his care are unparalleled in the

history of Rhode Island Interscholastic Athletics; and

     WHEREAS, In Steve's illustrious career he has won four state titles, coached numerous

All-State Wrestlers, and has been a highly respected and beloved figure in the sport of wrestling

in our state. Perhaps Hendricken Wrestling Head Coach Kevin Hennessy best described Coach

Gordon's importance to the wrestling community in Rhode Island when he said, "Steve is Rhode

Island Wrestling” and "When Steve gets up at a coaches' meeting to speak, the room goes silent.

He is the go-to guy for all of us coaches. When I need an explanation of something, I just call

Steve”; and

     WHEREAS, Cumberland Head Coach Steve Gordon reached a milestone few will ever

match when he won his 500th career dual-meet when his team defeated Narragansett High School

in a dominating performance by the score of 63 to 15. Even more remarkable is the fact that

Cumberland High School Wrestling, when it won its 500th win, recorded all of these wins under

the direction of one man, Head Coach Steve Gordon. This achievement is a testament to Coach

Gordon's superb coaching ability and his longstanding record of excellence. He already will leave

an unmatched legacy in Cumberland and one that few, if any, will ever match at the state level;

now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby congratulates Cumberland Wrestling Head Coach Steve Gordon on winning his 500th

dual-meet and we wish him continued success in all his future endeavors; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Cumberland High School Wrestling Head

Coach Steve Gordon.
