S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING JUDITH A. LUNDSTEN, CRANSTON SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT,

ON HER RETIREMENT AFTER THIRTY-THREE YEARS OF DEVOTED AND

EXEMPLARY SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF CRANSTON

     WHEREAS, Judith A. Lundsten is retiring as the Cranston School Superintendent after

2

thirty-three years of dedicated service to the citizens of Cranston. She served twenty-five of those

3

years as an educator, teaching the visually impaired. She later served as a Teacher Leader,

4

Principal, Executive Director of Educational Programs & Services, Assistant Superintendent, and

5

finally, as Superintendent; and

6

     WHEREAS, Ms. Lundsten has attained a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education

7

from the State University College at Oneonta, New York, a Master's degree in Special Education

8

from Vanderbilt University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Johnson & Wales

9

University; and

10

     WHEREAS, Ms. Lundsten was chosen to be the Superintendent of the Cranston Public

11

Schools in 2012. She inherited this position during a tumultuous time with a district facing

12

budget shortages and future debt repayment obligations. Facing this difficult task, she was able to

13

find consensus-building solutions and her compassionate and soft-spoken leadership style was

14

widely admired by the constituency she served. Ms. Lundsten will leave big shoes to fill and her

15

grace and extraordinary leadership skills will be sorely missed by the entire Cranston community;

16

now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

18

hereby congratulates Judith A. Lundsten on her retirement as the Cranston School Superintendent

19

after thirty-three years of devoted and exemplary service to the citizens of Cranston; and be it

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

3

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Judith A. Lundsten.
