EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF WILLIAM J.G. LAWTON, JR.

     WHEREAS, William J. G. Lawton, Jr., of Scituate, passed away on April 23, 2015. He

2

was the son of the late William J.G. Lawton, Sr., and Ursula F. Lawton. He was the husband of

3

Audrey A. Lawton for twenty-six years, and previously to the late Lillian J. Klumbis for thirty-

4

two years; and

5

     WHEREAS, Mr. Lawton served our nation with honor and valor during World War II in

6

the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Murphy. After the war, he served as a Police

7

Officer in the City of Providence from 1948 to 1968, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Detective,

8

and later served as the Chief of the Scituate Police Department from 1970 to 1990. In both cases,

9

he served the citizens of Providence and Scituate with integrity, devotion and diligence. He was

10

also employed by BankAmericard and started their security division; and

11

     WHEREAS, Mr. Lawton was beloved by all who knew him and was well-known for his

12

sense of humor. He loved telling his grandchildren stories and singing songs with them and was

13

able to keep them amused and occupied for hours at a time; and

14

     WHEREAS, In addition to his wife Audrey, Mr. Lawton leaves behind his daughters

15

Joyce B. Lindsay and her husband, Dan, and Lillian Jean Delmonico and her late husband,

16

William. He is the stepfather of Brenda E. Hopkins and Theodore H. Hopkins, III. He was

17

predeceased by his daughter, Kathleen A. Hanks and his son, Michael S. Lawton. He was the

18

proud grandfather of thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. William was the brother

19

of Theresa Dwyer, Ursula "Bobbie" Smith, James L. Lawton, and the late Eileen L. Coulombe;

20

now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2

hereby expresses its condolences to the Lawton Family on the passing of William Lawton, Jr.;

3

and be it further

4

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

5

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Audrey A. Lawton.
