     STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2015

____________

S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING THE ST. MARY ACADEMY-BAY VIEW GIRLS' BASKETBALL

TEAM ON WINNING THE 2015 RHODE ISLAND GIRLS BASKETBALL STATE

TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP

Introduced By: Senators Lombardi, Conley, Walaska, Felag, and DaPonte

     Date Introduced: May 14, 2015

Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration

1

WHEREAS, The St. Mary Academy-Bay View Girls' Basketball Team played their best

2

basketball at the right time of the season and won the 2015 Rhode Island Girls Basketball State

3

Tournament Championship, their first basketball title in nine years; and

4

WHEREAS, Bay View entered this year’s tournament as the second-seeded squad after

5

compiling an outstanding regular season record. In the first game of the Tournament, they

6

dominated Mt. St. Charles, winning easily by the score of 70 to 39. After dispatching Coventry by

7

the score of 58 to 40, Bay View faced St. Raphael in the Final Four, with the winner advancing to

8

the State Championship game. In a hard-fought contest, the Bengals came back from a two-point

9

halftime deficit to defeat St. Raphael 55 to 52 and win the right to face their arch-rival, La Salle,

10

for the State Championship; and

11

WHEREAS, Trailing by seven points at halftime in the championship game, Bay View

12

came out storming in the second half, using an aggressive defense to lead a 15 to 4 run early in

13

the second half that eventually led to them pulling away from La Salle and winning in dominating

14

fashion by the score of 54 to 39. Bay View's stifling defense stopped any La Salle player from

15

scoring in double digits while Bay View benefited from a deep and diverse roster as they had ten

16

players who scored double-digit points; and

17

WHEREAS, Winning a State Championship in a team sport requires that every member

18

of the team be one hundred percent committed to accomplishing team goals, even if that comes at

19

the expense of individual accomplishments. St. Mary Academy-Bay View has those kinds of

1

players in abundance as they benefitted all season by the contributions given from players Jazlyn

2

Contreras, Rylee Leonard, Blaine Lynch-Gadaleta, Elfreda Hoff, Dyamond Azakpo, Erin Dillon,

3

Laura Rubino, Alexa Raposa, Olympia Good, Mikaela Lee, Diana Bianco-Riley, Haley LeComte,

4

Dakota Grenier, Malaina Emidy, Cassandra Pare, Kathleen Rubino, Sofia Cabral, Maya

5

Solomon-Messier, Grace Hagberg, Jillian Lee, Ashley Omigie, Francesca Corsinetti, Morgan

6

Burke, Susanna Mello, and Abigail Burke. Bay View also benefitted from having outstanding

7

coaching led by Head Coach Doug Haynes and ably aided by Assistant Coaches Kaitlyn Birrell,

8

Joe Ercolano, and Morgan Kane; now, therefore be it

9

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

10

hereby congratulates the St. Mary Academy-Bay View Girls' Basketball Team on winning the

11

2015 Rhode Island Girls’ Basketball State Tournament Championship; and be it further

12

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

13

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to St. Mary Academy-Bay View Girls' Basketball

14

Head Coach Mr. Doug Haynes.
