S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING RABBI MARC S. JAGOLINZER FOR FORTY YEARS OF DEDICATED

SERVICE TO HIS FAITH AND THE COMMUNITY

     WHEREAS, A native of Providence, Rabbi Marc S. Jagolinzer has been the spiritual

2

leader of Temple Shalom in Middletown for the past 40 years. He is also a longtime community

3

leader, whose wide-ranging chaplaincy activities are reflective of his devotion to interfaith and

4

interdenominational understanding and acceptance; and

5

     WHEREAS, Rabbi Jagolinzer has been the Chair of the Interfaith Committee of the

6

Conference for Community and Justice for many years, and has served as a Past President of the

7

Rhode Island Board of Rabbis, past President of the Board of the Chaplaincy Center, was past

8

Chair of the Principal's Council and former Board Member of the Bureau of Jewish Education, a

9

past Secretary of the Newport Hospital Board of Trustees, and was past Chair and is a current

10

member of the Hospital's Ethics Committee; and

11

     WHEREAS, Over the years, Rabbi Jagolinzer's principles have inspired him to serve in

12

myriad capacities in the community in addition to serving his Congregation, including University

13

Chaplain at Roger Williams University and previously as Chaplain at Johnson & Wales

14

University. He is also on the adjunct faculty at Salve Regina University, where he teaches a

15

popular course entitled, The Jewish Experience; and

16

     WHEREAS, The inspiring ecumenical work of Rabbi Jagolinzer has brought together

17

members of all faiths in fellowship and devotion. He is currently President of The Aquidneck

18

Island Clergy Association, Past Convener of the Interfaith Leaders of Rhode Island and serves as

19

a member of the Diocese of Rhode Island's Child Protection Advisory Board; and

     WHEREAS, Rabbi Jagolinzer has flung himself into work with many community service

2

organizations and has given sermons and addresses in numerous religious houses of worship,

3

including having the distinction of being the first Jewish clergyperson to preach from the high

4

pulpit of the historic Trinity Episcopal Church in Newport; and

5

     WHEREAS, Multi-talented as well as deeply spiritual, Rabbi Jagolinzer pens a religion

6

column for The Newport Daily news, is currently one of the Chaplains for the Middletown Police

7

Department, and is the creator of an "Evening of Jewish Humor"; and

8

     WHEREAS, Earning a plethora of honors for his dedication to the people of this state,

9

Rabbi Jagolinzer was recently chosen by the Diocese to receive the prestigious Lumen Gentium

10

Award as a Friend of the Diocese of Providence. He has also been the recipient of numerous

11

awards from the United States Navy, the National Conference for Community and Justice and the

12

Jewish Federation of Rhode Island; and

13

     WHEREAS, In addition to his faith, a primary foundation in the life of Rabbi Jagolinzer

14

is his commitment to his family. He is the loving husband of 39 years to his wife, Barbara, the

15

devoted father of three children, and the very proud grandfather of three grandchildren; now,

16

therefore be it

17

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

18

hereby honors Rabbi Marc S. Jagolinzer for forty years of dedicated service to his faith, the

19

community, and the people of Rhode Island. He has helped to teach us the importance of all faith

20

communities coming together and of building bridges of dialogue; and be it further

21

     RSEOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

22

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Rabbi Marc S. Jagolinzer.
