RECOGNIZING JUNE 10, 2015 AS "NATIONAL TIME OUT DAY" IN THE STATE OF | |
RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, Taking a "time out" before operative and other invasive procedures is a |
2 | requirement of the Joint Commission Universal Protocol to prevent wrong site, wrong procedure, |
3 | and wrong person surgeries. Despite this requirement, it is estimated that wrong site surgeries |
4 | (WSS) occur between 40 to 60 times per week, and approximately 1,300 to 2,700 such incidents |
5 | occur annually; and |
6 | WHEREAS, To support the protocol and build greater awareness among surgical team |
7 | members, the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) launched the National |
8 | Time Out Day initiative. The initiative’s goal is to prevent errors, avoid tragedies, save lives, and |
9 | improve patient outcomes, by ensuring that all members of the surgical team pause before all |
10 | invasive procedures so they can communicate as a group and confirm key information about the |
11 | patient and the procedure; now, therefore be it |
12 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
13 | hereby recognizes June 10, 2015, as "National Time Out Day" in Rhode Island; and be it further |
14 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
15 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Julie Greenhalgh. |
