HONORING KIM GAFFETT FOR HER SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF BLOCK ISLAND | |
AND THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, The New Shoreham Town Council will be losing a valued member with the |
2 | retirement of First Warden Kim Gaffett; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Kim Gaffett is a native daughter of Block Island. She left the island to |
4 | attend the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, but returned shortly after receiving |
5 | her degree in biology and environmental science; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Upon coming home, Kim held a panoply of jobs including spending twenty- |
7 | one years as a bus driver and starting her own printing press business. In 1998, she began |
8 | working with the Ocean View Foundation, where she was able to put her educational background |
9 | to use; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Over the years, Kim was also becoming more involved in local politics and |
11 | issues. She had always been a regular attendee at Town Council meetings. In addition, she |
12 | became a member of the New Shoreham Planning Board and in 1988, successfully ran for a seat |
13 | on the New Shoreham Town Council; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Public service suited her well, and in 1994, Councilor Gaffett became the |
15 | Council's Second Warden, and for the past eight years, has served as First Warden. Her |
16 | successful leadership is due in no small measure to her ability to multi-task, her conviction in |
17 | compromise, and her heart-felt belief that serving the public to the best of her abilities is a |
18 | privilege; now, therefore be it |
19 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |

1 | hereby honors and commends Kim Gaffett on the occasion of her retirement from the New |
2 | Shoreham Town Council. She is a woman who stands admirably as an example for all Rhode |
3 | Islanders, of a public servant who led with integrity and dedication to the betterment of her |
4 | community; and be it further |
5 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
6 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Kim Gaffett. |
