S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

EXPRESSING SINCERE CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF EMMANUEL JANAROS

     WHEREAS, It is with utmost sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of

2

Emmanuel Janaros, a longtime and much respected member of the Newport community. Known

3

as "Mike" by his family and many friends, he was the beloved husband for sixty-seven years to

4

the late Mary Pappas Janaros, and was the devoted father of Tina Fowler and her husband, Frank

5

Fowler, Sofi Cofield and her husband, Clyde, Peter Janaros, P.E., and his wife, Diane, and Joanne

6

Cadenazzi. He was also the very proud "Papou" of eight grandchildren, Michael Cofield,

7

Michael Fowler, Ph.D., Stephen Cofield, Maria Fowler, Col. Jason M. Janaros, Michael

8

Cadenazzi, Jr., Marisa Cadenazzi Moore, and Peter Janaros, and fifteen beautiful great-

9

grandchildren, as well as many greatly loved nephews and nieces; and

10

     WHEREAS, Born in Manchester, New Hampshire, on November 13, 1916, Mr. Janaros

11

was the son of the late Peter Janaros and Sofia Viakrelis, who were both originally from

12

Mytilene, Greece, and was the brother of the late Mary Castonguay and Bella Ternes. At the age

13

of three, he and his family moved to the City of Newport, where he happily made his home for

14

the next ninety-five years. He graduated from Rogers High School and continued his education at

15

the United States Diesel School, where he met his wife, Mary; and

16

     WHEREAS, A well-liked and often-recognized face around the city, Mr. Janaros grew up

17

working at the Rhode Island Lunch, a Greek restaurant in which his father was a partner.

Possessed with an amazing work ethic from a very young age, he opened his own restaurant in

19

the 1940's, the Star Lunch on Broadway, which later became the Bartis family's business for 50

20

years; and

     WHEREAS, After leaving the restaurant business, Mr. Janaros was employed in a variety

2

of machinist and boat mechanic positions until eventually, he decided to go fishing. He then

3

acquired the Kismet, and became a lobsterman. On his recent 98th birthday, his family dedicated

4

a park bench, located on Long Wharf where his boat had been moored for many years, in his

5

honor. Ultimately, he returned to his roots and became a partner in the Satelite Restaurant on

6

Broadway, retiring at the age of sixty-five; and

7

     WHEREAS, Mike Janaros was a man of many facets and numerous talents. He was

8

proud of his Greek heritage and was a lifelong parishioner of Saint Spyridon's Greek Orthodox

9

Church and a proud member of the AHEPA. He was also well known for his imaginative

10

woodworking and carpentry talents. He enriched the lives of all who knew him and he will long

11

be remembered by all who were blessed to be part of his life; now, therefore be it

12

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

13

hereby expresses our deepest sympathies on the passing of Emmanuel Janaros; and be it further

14

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

15

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Tina Fowler and Family, Sofi Cofield and

16

Family, Peter Janaros, P.E., and Family, and Joanne Cadenazzi and Family.
